MS Block ‘unauthorized’ Xbox360 Storage Devices Update - Question

Hello.

In case you didn't read the news...

When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360. If you’ve moved your profile or saved games onto one to “back it up,  you’d better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update. If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games.

If you need help identifying officially licensed Xbox 360 storage devices or accessories you can read more about the licensed accessories program on Xbox.com

I have an 120Gb HDD but it's the Western Digital Scorpion (not sure if it's exactly this one) one modified to work with the Xbox360. Works flawlessly, never gave me a single error. I just use it to install the games and updates.

My profile and save games are on my official 256Mb Memory Unit.

My question is, will this update make my HDD useless?

If I copy my profile and save games from my 256Mb Memory Unit to my 120Gb HDD, will they became useless?

Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the, umm, repeat?

We're not sure (I am not sure) WHAT they will be blocking.

Datel makes a memory card that uses SD cards, I think that will be one of their targets.  You can use 16GB SD cards in the Xbox360 memory card adapter, for unlimited storage.

The are ways to block HDD upgrades, is to check the serial# of the drive, -vs- what's in the system now.  They did something similar with that, with original xbox to BAN it from live when it saw the Unlock key for the drive was not the same.  If you upgraded, you had to LOCK the new drive with the original key...  They can also go by serial# (more like Console ID) of the box, see it was supposed to have a 20GB at production; they see it's a 60, or 120, BOOM, it doesn't work anymore.  They have all the information in the Database, the MFR date, console ID, Key, Serial#, HDD type (size, security sector), and so on.  Any of that does not match?  Well, then they know.

It's not that hard, not at all.  Just be READY for it...

If you MOVE your stuff to a OEM memory card, before they make the hit, then it will be fine.  It does nothing to your Live account, you can always recover it on your ORIGINAL drive.  You will lose everything if they make an invasive hit.  Else, just hook it up to your PC, use Xplorer360 to get your stuff off, then put it back to the original drive, If that will even work.  The safest is to MOVE content to a valid card, then BACK to your original HDD.

Re: MS Block ‘unauthorized’ Xbox360 Storage Devices Update - Question

Thanks for your reply.

Funny thing is my Xbox360 is an arcade one, so no HDD came with it. The 1st time I connected the Xbox360 to the internet just to updated it, I had the "fake" 120Gb HDD... my Xbox360 never had an original HDD, always this "fake" one.

I'll just wait to see the the "fake" HDD stops working for anyone who updated... Since I don't use Live, I won't update untill I know for sure.

IT's not a FAKE hard disk, it is real, it is the type they use.  It is an UNAUTHORIZED HDD, not a fake one.
