But i can help you listen to music and look at pictures on your xbox if you want me to. Ive got the regular media connect

This whole thing with STREAMING VIDEO, you must have Windows Media Center Edition.  You do not need to be signed into LIVE to stream AUDIO or vew PICS.  I was doing that before even creating a name on my 2nd Xbox360, which is GOLD for 1 month, then Silver after. 

You do not need any special software to STREAM AUDIO, just enable file sharing on your winXP machine, pick folders with MP3s in it to SAHRE, and Xbox360 will find it.  It will list the PC name, and when you choose that, it will then show the folders/files you shared, and if there are MP3s in it/them, play them.

The DOWNLOAD you get from M$, when they provide you with that key (number), is for installation on Win Media Edition PC, you really do not need anything else for Audio and Pics.   There is another piece of software you can download for streaming the Audio, it is an GUI for choosing folders and adding them to the database, BUT, you do not need that if you use File Sharing on the PC. 

NOW, if you do not want to use File Sharing on the PC, for fear of OUTSIDE intervention, then you can use that small piece of software, other than that?  All you can do with WinXP is stream AUDIO, and view pics.

You can lay the whole 'video streaming' to rest, if you do not have Windows MEDIA CENTER EDITION, period.

Did you follow the SETUP steps though the Xbox360?   IT will give you a PIN and a site to download the software for your PC with MCE.  Also, if you ripped the DVD to the PC, and it is still in DVD file format (VideoTS folder and files?), it won't work, like playing like a movie.  You would have to play each VOB, one at a time, if Xbox360 will support it.  If you just copied the files to the PC from the disc?  They are encrypted, and it won't play either. The Xbox360 plays DVDs right from the drive, doesn't it?  If you are leaving the DVD in the PC drive, and want to stream from there, that will not work either, as the files are encrypted.

To stream video over your xbox360 it is a requirement that you have Microsoft Windows XP Media Center 2005.  You can purchase Win XP MCE05 from SOME retailers on the net for about $110-$130 but they require the purchase of hardware (a mouse, hard drive, mobo, etc) to meet their obligations with Microsoft to give you the copy of WIN XP MCE05.

Windows XP (Home and Professional) will allow you to stream music and pictures only.  With the arrival of Microsoft Windows Vista this will change because Vista (arrives in Q1 '06) will have built in media capabilities.

MCE 05 is the same thing as Windows XP but it has an additional component designed for streaming media, recording tv, etc.

To setup your 360 w/ your PC you DO NOT have to make any changes to your firewalls.  A firewall is designed to contain and control traffic that flows from your WAN to you LAN.  If you are attempting to connect two machines that are within the LAN then the firewall will not come into to play at any point.      This will be true with all routers unless you are running a configuration beyond a single cable modem and a router.

If they do that would be cool...I plan on waiting untill Vista arrives, that version of the OS will also provide HD playback via media center...I definately agree...you pay $400 for the premium console that doesn't utilize its full capabilities, not to mention that even w/ MCE 05 it will only play back one file format.  That's just ridiculous.  Let me download the codecs to the xbox or something, i have to re-encode around 40 dvd's that I backed up and then re-encoded to knock down the size.  now I have to re-encode them to make them the correct format.

Once again, Microsoft is costing me three important things: Time, Money, and my sanity.  Thank you Bill Gates.

media player 11 will stream it all to you 360 mine works fine
the only thing that i can not get to work is the movies
but I'm shore ill get it going one day

go to windows media player, click on the library tab, then media sharing, then check the box and follow the rest. it is simole
