Teens suspected of horrific cat attack

The SPCA has tracked down two teenagers it believes were responsible for the horrific torture and hanging of a cat from a Tauranga road sign last month.

The information has been passed on to police, and charges are expected to be laid.

Tauranga SPCA manager John Esdaile, a former police inspector, said his own inquiries led him to a teenager he believed mutilated the cat only hours after he saw his father give his girlfriend a serious beating.

The dead tabby had a nail rammed through its head. Its tail and three paws were severed -- injuries believed to have been inflicted while it was still alive -- and the fourth paw was hanging by a thread of skin.

A jogger found the cat tied to a Tauranga street sign by a piece of red string attached to its neck.

"That was right at the top of the (cruelty) scale," Mr Esdaile told the New Zealand Herald.

"This guy that's done this is psychotic. He needs some serious help...

"The reality is that this little thing (the teen) saw his father beating his girlfriend up only hours beforehand.

"It was a pretty serious assault from all accounts and he decided, `Oh that's all right, I'll go out and do this to the cat'."

Mr Esdaile said a second teenager, aged about 18, was also believed to have been involved.

Last week, the SPCA visited local school in a bid to track down the culprits.

Armed with graphic pictures of the cat, they appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

The move -- which brought complaints from some parents -- paid off, as leads flowed in about the two teenagers.

Mr Esdaile said information had now been passed to the police, who were expecting a "successful resolution".

Shit like that really pisses me off.  I mean geez, if he's pissed off at his dad then why doesn't he go beat his dad up?  No sense in taking his anger out on some poor defenseless creature who didn't do anything to deserve it.  I mean wtf?
