It let's you play backed up games - a lot of people use it to play pirated games, that is not supported on the forums, if you can't support the developer of the game then you shouldn't steal their hard work!

should i really update the system after my 360 hacked?

Updating your dashboard will not effect the DVD-Rom's firmware, so updating the dashboard is fine.
