M$: Blu-ray absence is key to 360 outselling PS3?

Posted by The Ori

From computerandvideogames.com:

Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg has claimed that Xbox 360 has “nearly twice” PS3′s installed base – partly because its lack of a Blu-ray drive allows it to be sold at a more attractive price point.

The Xbox product director claimed that “being $100 cheaper [than PS3] is part of the reason we’re nearly twice their installed base”.
Wait, $100.00 cheaper?  NOT NOW.  This is a little late

It’s likely he was referring to Xbox 360′s North American installed base, with 360 and PS3 widely reported to be neck-and-neck in Europe.

“Sony bet on the physical disc, and there are costs associated with that,” Greenberg told Edge magazine.
“The fact that we’re able to offer a console starting at $199 is a benefit of not being burdened with that cost.”
Yes, and the burden of having to have THREE discs for games like Final Fantasy, yes, what a burden.

Truth is, M$ should have gone with a better (more disc space) optical drive.  I won’t buy any game that is more than ONE disc, period. If I buy the new Final Fantasy, sorry, it will be for the PS3.  I will not support multi-disc games when there’s this cool stuff out there, called TECHNOLOGY, and M$ should have used it.

i love both my xbox and my ps3. but im not daft enough to believe that theres twice as many xboxs (and this is only the US btw, for some reason microsoft execs think the whole world is just america) because of its lack of bluray drive.lol. its a combination of the fact that americans prefer the xbox, just as the japanese prefer the ps3, and because of the RROD, id bet a very large sum of money that there isnt twice as many xbox360s in the US. id be very surprised if there was even 25% more… it also helps they had a years head start.lol. if both consoles where released on the same day and had the same reliabilty the install base would be very close. even with the price differential. in europe where we traditional dont lean towards either console, the xbox and ps3 are neck and neck..

You have a fair point, but the ”Split Vid” is a major piece of the dvd security. I do a gree with you though. They should have used the entire (Read : 99%) of the 7.25 gig available on the disc.

On a different note, maybe they are planning Blu-Ray for the Xbox 720.

Lol, or they could use HD-DVD’S as there discs !! Nobody has a HD-DVD reader/write !!

The security is why there is just over 6GB of usable space, which is what Square E has pointed out…

I could probably swap an Xbox DVD game and read it quicker than a Blu-Ray takes to spin up and read. Seriously the seek and read times on the PS3 is awful.

Various comparisons show that FFXIII loads much quicker on the PS3 than it does on the 360, even when installed to HDD. By no means does that test apply to every game out there, but it’s proof enough that the PS3′s read times aren’t “aweful”.

IF people can’t reply without the profanity, your stuff gets deleted, and reported as spam so you can’t post from that IP address anymore.

The disc security leave you with just over 6GB of usable space. Square E said that was a problem, with heavy compression on graphics, makes the XB360 version visually inferior to the PS3 version.

Most games that people want to play are released for both systems, and the XBOX 360 version is always cheaper.

Blue Ray is TECHNOLOGY if you think that discs are the future, and based on the Wii Classic Games, 360 Arcade, PS Online and the PSP Go, you’d be the only one.

Sony guys love to point out how great their system is, how much better it is without switching discs, and that is the same rhetoric the OG XBOX guys used to tell people, and their system was second fiddle to the PS2, a weaker but cheaper system.

So how does it taste Sony, that the best and most expensive is not what gamers are looking for, the most people and the most games are what people are looking for and always have been. Enjoy your super system with its awesome 7 CORES of power! Feel the satisfaction of buying two games when I buy three for the same price. And marvel at your awesome FREE online play that still cant beat an online service that YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR!

And just to point out, I hate M$, I’m a lifelong Linux user and I loved the PS1/PS2/PSP.

I’m glad I’m not the only one trying to educate the OP. Well put neo!

Educate the OP? What’re you on about mate? He only stated that the 360 version was visually inferior, which is correct; it runs at 576p both in-game and during cutscenes, and the FMVs are compressed, whereas the PS3 version runs at 720p and has uncompressed 1080p footage for the FMVs.

Also, as far as I can tell, multiplatform games generally sell for EXACTLY the same price.

Hey OP,

M$ did use better technology… it’s called HD-DVD… but in the battle against the new media, BluRay won. It was a gamble everyone was taking when this Generation of Consoles took off. And your stupid for complaining about multiple discs… and before you rant about Xbox getting on the bluray ban wagon, don’t. They would have to do a lot of work with coding, contracts, and promotions to get the idea to lift off. Meaning that it wouldn’t be cost effective to do so before the Next Gen Consoles.

If I were in charge of Xbox, I wouldn’t change a thing except customer service in regards to bricked consoles and the $99 dollar flat rate for fixing even the mundane problems with the system that are usually because of over heating 99.9% of the time. the 0.1% is faulty DVD drives, AV, or power problems.

So stop whining about multi-discs, there’s really nothing wrong with it, other than you need to get off your lazy arse to change the discs. “Oh how inconvenient” They are they same game just on a different format. If your that worried about it, don’t even bother getting out of bed and poisoning our society with your illness.

That HD-DVD was an external drive, 100% useless for gaming, thus the new FF is 3 DVD9s.

Copy your DVD’s to the HDD and nobody knows that the game is 3 disc’s
.

You still have to put the original in the drive to launch it! Unless they are allowing you to keep disc one in, for two and three.

maybe the reason there are more 360s sold in the US is because people have to buy second (maybe 3rd) to replace their last one that red ringed right after warranty expiration. So really $130 is not realistic, cause you have to spend an extra 40 for the reseller extended warranty. then you have to factor the 50 for the live account. So 220 is more realistic cost for a 360. for only 80 more bucks, a ps3 slim is well worth it. Cool your jets fanboys, don’t start. I own both systems and am very happy with the exclusive games on both. But facts are facts. Only needed to buy one 1 ps3. Been through 3 360′s. Pretty much equal usage….Thank god for reseller warranties.

I am only on my second XB360, the first one had a DVD drive failure, a release model; and, I have had the 2nd one since. I guess I am just one of the lucky ones that don’t have the failures other people do. Then again, I am not on hours upon hours a day, and it’s well vented and taken care of.

I have both systems one time and now I have 2 ps3′s(slim and 60gb fat)but here is why. I bought a ps3 and then later in 2009 i bought a elite 360 at game-crazy (new) with a contract so tht i can always come back 4 a new one. and so i went through FouR 360′s. the first one’s fan was so LOUD like a jet and then when the disk spins its even LOUDER. and the nxt one got the rrod(3 red lights).nxt got another loud fan and red ringed and the fouth one rrod AGAIN(one red light) and so ps3 lasts long and 2 this day the 60gb model still works like new and i rlly did like the 360 but the hardware sucked so bad is all.

Are you serious OP? 100% useless? You must be crazy! But then again, no one will ever know since development for the device has been halted. But in all honesty, why are you complaining about 3 discs for FF13? Dude, Blue Dragon has 3 Discs as well… and that was released in 2006. Just because there are more discs doesn’t mean the product is of lower quality. In actuality, it means that the publisher didn’t compress the information, therefore allowing the resolution and such to remain high… which of course results in having to place the game on more discs.

Also, you are wrong about the prices. Microsoft still offers a $199 USD console as their cheapest ‘NEW’ console. Whereas Sony’s cheapest ‘NEW’ console is $299. Grant it, they aren’t a nice bundle for either ‘brand’ but they are in fact their cheapest models. Go look at gamestop.com, that’s where I got my prices from.

Useless, YES, the External HD-DVD player for the Xbox360 IS USELESS FOR GAMING, I said.. SO, English not your first language huh?

What about the PRICE? Again, English is very hard to master, sorry… Go back to school and learn it some more. I meant they, SONY, were a little too late, theirs being 100.00 cheaper, what’s with your comprehension of the English language? Yeah, an arcade for $199.99, then to bitch you don’t have a HDD, so it’s a catch 22.

Blue Dragon, 3-discs, another game I would not Buy, and its not my type of game either.

You are also WRONG about the quality, the XB360 graphics for the new FF, they are not as good as the PS3s version, because of the compression, and that’s straight from Square E! That article I read was in, yeah, sorry, ENGLISH…

The resolution for the game, for XB360 is upconverted from 576 to 720P, where the PS3 is true 720P. M$ has cheated in this manner MANY times. I own BOTH systems, but IF I were to get FF, it would be the PS3 version, not the 360 version.

Read it and, oh, SORRY, that’s in ENGLISH…
