June 8, 2009Microsoft kills “coffin” policy; pack your 3LoD/E74 Xbox yourself
Posted by The Ori
Microsoft – the manufacturer of the RRoD-prone Xbox 360 – has confirmed to Joystiq that it’s discontinued its policy of providing a prepaid box with shipping label, more commonly referred to as the “coffin,” for all Xbox 360 repairs. As of May 26 the policy was discontinued “in an effort to expedite the repair process.” Customers will have the option of receiving an e-label to slap on the box they ship their bricked consoles in, but the days of the “coffin” are now over. A Microsoft spokesperson tell us, “Customers can now ship their consoles themselves using an e-label provided by Microsoft and do not need to wait for an empty box to be shipped to them.”
I recently found this out (about two weeks ago), when a friend of the family called them (after I told him about the E74 warranty), to send his E74 console back.

Meh, it’s kind of annoying having to search for a box/packaging yourself, but there are far more annoying things that M$ is doing (like STILL having RRoD/E74-type errors!).
It is really annoying trying to find a box thats the right size for your box. my xbox 360 disk-drive broke and i had to send it back to the company, this was around the 3rd week of January 2009. My neighbor has the elite console when his broke with the red ring, Microsoft shipped him a box, This was in March. I think they stopped everything but the elite, prolly since the cost is still up the wall.
ummm i just got the RRoD on my Xbox Elite about a week ago (8-11-09) and there is an option on the repair site to request them to send u a box with labels.. u just gotta wait a week to get it lol…
