August 26, 2008Xbox Originals and Backwards Compatibility come to an end?
Posted by The Ori
Another broken promise…
In recent time, MR asked Global Marketing Director, Albert Pennello, regarding the future of Backwards Compatibility for the 360. While Rare fans got what they wanted, his answers were very interesting. He insisted that if there has been a title that we haven’t seen backwards compatible yet, it’s because that there have been technical difficulties putting them on the service. “People are moving on,” he said, “would you rather have those guys working on that or doing something new?” in reference to the new Xbox Live Avatar-filled Dashboard.
What does this have to do with Xbox Originals, you may ask? Through different insider sources, MundoRare can confirm that Xbox Originals, the service that re-releases some Xbox 1 titles on Xbox Live, won’t be around for the same reason that Backwards Compatibility will most likely never see another update again. “I think they are pretty much done with that,” another source said.
It’s ptobably the end of new titles for XB1 backward compatibility fot Xbox-360.

The fact is about 60% of xbox games are compatiable with the 360, and until all 60% of those are available over the service there will be games to put up there.
as for bc, this is why you make a full software emulator instead of making games work on the 360 on an individual basis.
I did not mean the end of BC, just no more titles will be added to the BC list of compatible games.
I predict that at some time, you will either have an option to remove the BC software, or new consoles won’t have it, and you will have the option to download it… Who knows, but, at least it wasn’t COMPLETELY REMOVED like Sony did so new PS3 customers, ha ha ha…
come on, I have about 10 xbox games that are fun (Oddworld: Stranges Wrath, POP: Warrior Within,…) that don’t play yet! AND I don’t even have an original Xbox. :( so I cannot play them as of right now.
max payne, max payne 2 & halo 2 is all i need :)
Hell yeah I’d like them to work on backwards compatability instead of “something new”. The new XBL avatars nearly made me puke when I saw them unveiled at E3. How hard is it, really, to update the older titles for the “amazing” new XB360? I’ve had mine for quite some time, but have been getting pissed off at a lot of news releases involving the 360 as of late. M$ needs to remember the original games that made them the powerhouse that they are or we’ll see another Atari-like end to a great system.
yet another reason Microsoft suxbox is terrible. PS3 FTW! -(profanity removed)-
By the way Flame me all you want, but I own all three systems and PS3 is the best. Wii is pretty good, I finally got WiiFit and it is AWESOME. PS3 was slow to start but now has all the things the 360 had first(Trophies, in game XMB and music, and a much better online store) Plus the HDD replacement is way cheaper(My 60GB launch model is now 250GB for $100)
I could go on, but as I am sure you are ripping your hair out at the roots waiting to bitch and call me names, by all means go ahead :)
i have to agree. i own them too. ps3 rockz. wii too. xbox360 is a crappy piece of shit. the crappy backwards compatibilty proves another time the way m$ goes. they make advertises where they boast of it but it’s just a bait. nothing more.
Yep. I own both the XB360 and PS3. I first had the 360, but when I finally picked up my PS3, I was way more excited about what the PS3 could do than I ever was with the 360. I should’ve bought my PS3 first.
I just can’t wait until Playstation Home is released.
i do own both 360 and PS3. i must say the PS3 had a VERY slow start but if you look at it now it does far exceed the 360 in what it offers users.
i cant be asked paying to play online anymore, so just play on the PS3 now. that said there are some good titles on the 360 i wish were on the PS3, but the same could be said the other way round :/
yeah ps3 did have a slow start but look at it now its getting up there
If on-line play is the beef: If M$ were to offer free on-line nultiplayer option? The entire console playing field would shift drastically to 360; because that’s all Sony really has going for PS3 right now, is FREE on-line play. Lets face the fact that; Sony does NOT have the software development like the 360 does, they admit it, and so do the developers that are not PORTING to it. A good handful of Sony Exclusive titles have gone to 360. Ace Combat; that being one of the main reasons I bought the PS3, to find it went to 360, and NO PS3 at all.
Look, the PS3 is STILL struggling to get original coded titles and not PORTS. I got both consoles, and I will not buy PS3 ported from 360 titles, I just won’t. Games like the RTS Civilization? Well, which ever console it’s cheaper to buy for, I will get, because it’s not a graphic extensive game.
Note: This “mine is better than yours” will never EVER cease, as it is reason for wars on a larger scale now, because of the “my god is better than yours” mentality. The simplicity of it is: You like what you like, I like what I like, so neither you nor I, have the right to attack anyone, or to use ignorance and/or profanity to tell someone that you think yours stuff is better. People who do that are weak minded to start.
I have to agree. To each is own, I just never really got into the 360, but it isn’t a terrible system. So what if I have had to send it off for repairs, and they charge for online play. I was thinking of subscribing for a gold membership, if nothing else, so that I can watch my instant Netflix on my T.V. Personally, I only own two or three games for it(I am a PS3 fanboy, as shown above) and none of them have online play anyway.
Plus I can’t wait for that update that will make it look more like my Wii. I love those little big headed bastards. It also is neat that I will be able to have friends watch movies with me from across the world.
PS3 has dissapointed on the release of Home, and their stupid Life With Playstation crap. But as long as Xbox keeps copying other systems they should stay above water.
jk ;) peace be to you bloggers
wow nothing but agreements so far awesome. I guess 360 fans have nothing to say ;)
Both companies have reneged on their backward compatibility promise; showing the lack of INTEGRITY they both have, thus having NOTHING to do with what console is better. They BOTH screwed everyone with backward compatibility, and you people post PS3 is better? So not the topic, and SONY did the same thing with their PS2 backward compatibility, except they decided to ELIMINATE it all together?! Yeah, that’s excellent, the PS3 is oh so awesome now!
Who sucks? Sony does (not the PS3) for taking it (PS2) away all together with new consoles. Xbox 360 will still have it, just with no NEW title support.
I don’t understand why people always are comparing systems like teenage boys comparing who’s D*** is bigger. Its about games people. If you want to play your xbox/ps2 games the way they were meant to use a xbox or a ps2. Graphics aren’t everything gameplay is fact.
Props to the ori, I had forgotten about that. As I was lucky enough to get a 60 gig model well after launch(over a year). So as long as I don’t need repairs(Xbox360), I have the actual ps2 chip inside and not the software emulation, or no support at all. I am sorry to say mean things about Xbox and will not sell it or get rid of it in any way, but still.
Yep, the original 60/20GB USA & JAP model PS3s have a separate area on the mainboard with the EE+GS+RAM so, it’s basically the PS2 onboard. Sony then went with the GS only (-EE -RAM), for the PAL intro models, and all 80GB consoles; then to nothing with the 40GB, and all newer models. So, they reneged on their PROMISE to the buyers, but most importantly, the FANS…
The fact is Microsoft NEVER actually promised 100% XB1 backward compatibility. They said it would be on a title by title basis, when they can get the title working. So, while they recently made their decision to stop adding titles, they did not REMOVE it all together like Sony did, after a promise of having it. This was a KEY factor in people buying a PS3, was to be able to keep playing their PS1/PS2 games.
As an owner of both, I have quite a few problems with the PS3 (which I bought before I ever got a 360).
a. A bunch of unnessecary settings that should have been covered with autodetection like the 360.
b. The graphics aren’t as good. Thats right, I said it. I don’t know where people get this “PS3 POWERHOUSE” impression (the WHOLE REASON I waited and bought a PS3)… But both systems on my 42 inch LCD in 1080p (which most games don’t even come in on the PS3 I noticed) and it’s obvious the 360 is more powerful graphically. Look at Skate, Assasins Creed, Timeshift, etc… You’re a fanboy if you say otherwise, it’s obvious. Even the PS3 exclusive games I have like Drakes Fortune and MGS4 are not impressive graphically like Gears of War was, and thats 2 years later for those games.
c. Backwards compatibility. I can play 20 of my 40 original xbox games. I got rid of the rest with my original xbox. I can play NO PS2 games. I still have to own my PS2, which is a waste of space. My buddy has a launch PS3 which still only plays SOME of his PS2 games, and does a good job of making those look crappier, rather than better like my 360 does for my xbox games.
d. Crappy old PS2 controller with bad battery life and hand cramps galore. Theres a difference between keeping something thats already good and not putting effort into it. They know that thing needs a couple edges moved around slightly that would help IMMENSELY.
e. Why does my hard drive keep corrupting files?
f. Internal hard drive… WHY!?!?!?!? I should be able to take my drive to a buddies house like on my 360…
g. The online store is DEAD, and has a horrible layout. Whoever said otherwise is a fanboy.
h. Bluetooth headsets. It’s STUPID because
1. They’re expensive
2. No one has them, voicechat is dead
3. When someone does have them, they are static half of the time
4. Why does mine keep disconnecting regardless of which model bluetooth is used?
i. Online is dead compared to 360. I mean really, seeing the same people on certain games everyday on a WORLDWIDE network is retarded. I can play games 2 years old (or even original xbox games!!!) on xbox live, and see different people EVERYDAY. And there is ALWAYS someone there.
All in all, they have ALOT to work out with this PS3… I think they tried to do WAY TOO MUCH and should have focused more on GAMING like microsoft did at least.
As an owner of both, allow me to address your problems with the PS3 (which I bought after I got a 360).
a. More settings mean more ability to fit you as an individual, and all display settings will set automatically if you let them.
b. The graphics are great, even though I never really thought that HD was a requirement for a video game. Look at the Wii, it seems to be doing fine without it.
c. I had a friend give me a few Xbox originals as gifts and none would play. While every game I owned for my PS2 plays just fine in my PS3 and I own quite a few.
d. The controllers for both systems are nearly identical. Theres a difference between keeping something and a newer company copying it exactly only moving one analog stick slightly.
e. Maybe you are doing something wrong, mine works fine.
f. You prefer the one that is available to you, and is extremely overpriced. I can move things from PS3 to PS3 with a USB stick, my portable USB HDD, or an SD, Compact Flash(gay), or Memory Stick Duo.
g. The online store is Awesome, and has a wonderful layout. Plus Updates every week, lots of demos, videos, and exclusive content.
h. Bluetooth headsets. Aren’t STUPID because
1. They’re not expensive
2. Everyone has them, voicechat is dead on 360. PS3 is all about video chat.
3. PS3 has an official one coming with SOCOM, basically free
4. You bought a cheap 50 dollar headset that probably won’t even work with a mobil phone.
i. Online is great compared to 360. I mean really, seeing the same people on certain games everyday on a WORLDWIDE network means the games are better. If you want to lose to different people, go to a new room in the lobby. Games such as Warhawk, GTA4, and MGS4O are always full of people, at all hours of the day.
All in all, they have ALOT of ground covered with this PS3… You think they tried to do WAY TOO MUCH and should focus more on GAMING like microsoft did, because Microsoft is terrible and should stick to making windows.
Heh Heh
Jeffrey Thomas (2K’s VP of sports development): SAID: Internally, we develop on the 360, because the toolset that Microsoft provides is a better toolset, but we also concurrently work on the PS3; so the development is going on at the same time, and there are people specializing on both. But a lot of the development that can be across the board is done on a 360, and Microsoft’s toolset is a lot better of a toolset than Sony’s.
Translation = PORTS
i was wondering if the xbox 360 backwards caompatibility update would screw up a flashed 360 console. liike does it update the firmware?
