Peter Moore warns against suing file-sharers

Posted by The Ori

EA Sports boss Peter Moore has said he doesn’t support the move to sue consumers for illegal downloading - warning, “It didn’t work for the music industry.”

Moore was speaking to GamesIndustry.biz at the Leipzig Games Convention, following the announcement that five games companies are taking legal action against 25,000 file-sharing internet users.
“I’m not a huge fan of trying to punish your consumer,” he said. “Albeit these people have clearly stolen intellectual property, I think there are better ways of resolving this within our power as developers and publishers.”

According to Moore, there are lessons to be learned from the experiences of other industries. “If we learned anything from the music business, they just don’t win any friends by suing their consumers,” he observed. “Speaking personally, I think our industry does not want to fall foul of what happened with music.”

i heard an unemployed mother of two got hit with a £16,000 fine for downloading some shitty pinball game. its happening already. two of the five game companies in this scheme are codemasters and atari. i forget the names of the others. but makes you think, fuck! £16k?!

yes but that was because of uploading, not downloading but it still doesn’t warrant that much money, that amount of money would be substantial to all of that games manufacturing costs, and will add up to most of their profit.
There is absolutely no way that amount of money can be classed as “to cover losses”

I know it is against the law to dl games, music, ect. I know everything publish to the Internet is on a “Educational” purpose basically showing you how to do it. Now if you take it beyond that point then there really aint much to say if you get caught. Switch to an isp that only cares if you pay your bill ontime. :)

hmm cover losses eh, so if i download a game thats $60 for me that i didn’t spend. Shouldn’t they be suing for that much?
The only reason they are suing is because more than 80% of the games that are released are just plain Garbage and they can’t get anyone to spend the ridiculous $60+ they want for a steaming pile of crap. So they sue all the ppl downloading the crap. Personally i download my games before i even think about buying it and most of the time i wont cause it was shit anyways.

im sorry, but im tired of the bullshit arguments that you and every other shameless asshole give to try and justify your blantant theft. sorry, but when a GOOD game sells so few copies, but has MILLIONS illegally downloading it theres a HUGE problem. case in point, assassins creed, dmc4, STALKER, cod4, etc. all had more people downloading the pc versions of the games that people actually buying them. and all of these games were actaully good, worthwhile games.

FACT is people just dont want to have to pay for it when they can get it illegally for free.

suing isnt the right awnser though, the right awnser would be to make an actual worthwhile drm method, one thats transparent to the user that makes it impossible to make an iso of the disc or, dare i say it, use truseted computing.

what i find funny is that someone that reads “Xbox 360 Hacks” has such a problem with downloading games.

Of course no one wants to pay for it, but there are some ppl out there that still buy the games. 3 out of 4 of those games you mentioned, i downloaded before i bought them. Yet i still use my copied version so i don’t wreck my good copy which i collect.

Oh yeah, there will NEVER be a copy protection that can’t be overcome. It’s just not possible.

So it just that no cares to do so, or that there’s no interest in making the PS3 capable of playing backups?

yea other way like the companys that are smart enough to offer a little extra to the consumer to drive sells. (i.e. the collector’s edition g.t.a.4) any company could do the same thing. even just creative packageing can work wonders. (i.e. steel game cases) and as far as downloading for “trial purposes” thats bull because you can rent or get demo’s of allmost any game. downloading is largly just greed. but there ARE exceptions.
sorry for the long “speach”
