Looks like something may FINALLY be here for the Hitachi 79 series drive:
A method was released on how to unlock the Hitachi v79 in order to dump and flash with fwtoolbox.
Turorial:
1. Unrar the file
2. Burn the CD Image, I used ImgBurn….
3. Put 79 in Mode B
3. Insert the CD in the 79 and play the track, wait for it to finish…
4. Then press play again and straight away pause it, you should hear some noise
5. Eject the disk, using the eject button not the PC ( it does something different)
6. Run the the command in a command window
79Unlock h
// where h is the drive letter of the 79
7. If all went well bit 4 of (0×5BD) should be set and the drive should be unlocked
8. Drive will dump and flash with Toolbox…
9. This is a tempory unlock, (0×5BD) is in RAM and would need to be done each time you power the drive. There is a method on how to by pass this with the drive unlocked with a passkey.
10. Has not been extensively tested but worked on 6 drives to date.
It doesn’t say how many TOTAL drives were tested, for six to work.

So it says put into mode B can this be done with the slax cd or can we use the same method as for the hitachi drive. Thanks

Has anyone tried to restore back from flashed? all i get is an error. Flash went well but i used an early toolbox and wanted to use 4.6 but it won’t let me back. any ideas?

Guy I found this video on Youtube showing you how to run Noclip, God Mode, Spawning Combines, Manhacks, All Weapons (Half Life 2 Weapons etc) Kill things by looking at them!!! In Orange Box on Xbox 360!!!!!! Its awesome!!!
So what do you mean by “temporary unlock?” Do I have to unlock the 79 again everytime I boot the xbox 360. Or do you mean I only need to unlock again to update the firmware?
YEAH, I tried this method today and it worked perfectly. Just some notices for the ones who want to try this method: “Strictly follow the steps, don’t skip, don’t do anything out of the guide!”

BRILLIANT!!! IT WORKS!!! Flashed my Hiatchi v79! WOOT! XD Like a previous poster said, follow each step very carefully (had some problem i couldnt find, maybe ejected the drive wrong and it kept freezing my computer up, its tricky at some point). If you do follow the steps carefully you’ll have awesome results, the unlock tool will work with no error and you can generate and flash the hitachi. “Temporary Unlock” only means that the unlock isn’t permanent, so even though the flash is permanent if you ever want to upgrade it you’ll need Slax and Unlock tool again. But the flash IS PERMANENT. =) Also you’ll want Maximus toolbox 4.6 which comes with iXtreme 1.4 for Hitachi 79. Have fun if you come through with also hacking your system, I know I will. woot! XD
Using the slax 2.1 but cannot seem to put in B mode. I never get to the spinning of disc part. I tried with my mobo sata’s and with Via6421L chipet. Can this be a compatibily prob with my mobo. I tried at a friends house and we had no problem getting it into B mode. Once we got to the part of dumping the firmware is computer would freeze or a msg box would pop and say cannot read from disc drive. toolbox was 4.6. Anyone have a suggestion?

Anyone ever run across being able to successfully dump the firmware then getting booted from toolbox; I tried reflashing it reads the drive in windows and not in toolbox also gives me error cannot detect drive. I have 6421a VIA chipset but i also used my onboard SATA. Any ideas?
Everytime I do this, I can only get to the part where you are supposed to play the cd using windows media player. Once I restart my computer and attempt to do that, my hitachi drive will not stay shut. keeps opening on its own. Any ideas? Thanks
