April 3, 2008Xbox360 With Blu-Ray: Yes? Seemingly? NO!!
Posted by The Ori
YES?: April 1st (ha!) - Lite-On IT is developing built-in Blu-ray Disc-(BD) ROM drives for the Microsoft Xbox 360 game console, according to industry sources. Lite-On declined to comment, citing client confidentiality. Lite-On’s shipments of the BD ROMs to Microsoft will start in the second half of 2008, the sources added. Lite-On is currently one of the suppliers of Xbox 360-use internal DVD-ROM drives. Power supply makers also revealed that while the present Xbox 360 uses a 210-watt power supply, the next-generation game console will use a 170-watt power supply in order to reduce production cost and the size of the device, according to the sources.
SEEMINGLY?: April 2nd - If, as previously reported, Microsoft adopts built-in Blu-ray Disc (BD)-ROM drives for a new version of its Xbox 360, sales prices are likely to be lower than the corresponding production costs since current OEM quotes for BD-ROM drives are as high as US$95-100, according to industry sources in Taiwan. It is reported that Microsoft plans to offer a new Xbox 360 hardware revision equipped with a BD-ROM drive to compete with Sony’s PlayStation 3. Taiwan-based Lite-On IT is said to have been invited to participate in designing the drive. However, while the US$95-100 quoted for a BD-ROM drive is much higher than US$18-20 quoted for the DVD-ROM drives built into current Xbox 360s, the increase in retail price of the new consoles is unlikely to cover the whole of the OEM price gap, the sources analyzed, meaning Microsoft would be selling the consoles at a loss.
NO!!!: April 2nd (later in the day) - Microsoft has insisted that Lite-on will not be making Blu-ray drives for its Xbox 360, despite widespread internet rumours to the contrary. Here’s the statement just in from Microsoft to scupper their rumour-mongering: “No. Lite-On is not manufacturing Blu-ray drives for Xbox 360. As we have stated, games are what are driving consumers to purchase game consoles and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster game available.
“For our customers who want a premium movie experience we offer the largest library of on-demand HD content available and the ability to play back DVDs in high definition.”

oh lol! i know microsoft say that games is what drives the sales but how long till the ps3 ttiles are coming out as 20gig games? with huge amounts of content and playability.
i think the same story is happenign here as with the playstation 2, it started off bad but then slowly became the dominant market leader.
i have both the 360 and ps3 and to be honest i play the ps3 far more purley due to that fact that online play is free and it has built in wireless to connect to my wirless router. with the 360 i have to either shell out for the wireless adapter or get a bitch ass long ethernet cable wired through my house. its just not worth the hassle imo.
For your information, the PS2 kicked ass ever since it launched. Wanna know why? Because it’s a video game console. VIDEO GAMES. Sony’s strategy for the PS3 was “Let’s use the Playstation name and the pole-riding fanboys and shove Blu-Ray up everyone’s asses”.
Blu-Ray didn’t win because of the PS3. Sure, the darn thing helped but it didn’t kill HD-DVD. Dirty corporate tactics saved Blu-Ray’s ass.
You can pathetically justify the PS3’s presence in your home but until the Blu-RayStation gets a truckload of games that score 90 or higher on Metracritic, it’ll receive nothing but my harsh criticism.
ummm no… the ps2 struggled in its early months due to developers having difficulty coding for gmaes as the new emotion engine was rather complicated. I’m just pointing out the fact that the same thing seems to be happening here with the ps3.
BTW i’m not trying to be a fan-boy or anything, i own both a 360 and a ps3, i just feel the ps3 is gonna slowly become the leader once again.
for me the ps3 is the more complete package, built in wireless as standard, better controller set-up, very quite, does’nt get bitch ass hot like the 360, does’nt die like the 360 is prone to :P
the blu-ray disc gives developers huge potential for creating huge games with massive amounts of content, once development becomes more streamlined i dont see how the DVD game format can compare : /
just my two-pence.
The xbox is the current winner as far as games goes…that I can not deny. But already a couple of games on the PS3 far overshoot anything the 360 is capable of. The core of the 360 is working at its max, and the disc space is already at a premium. Unfortualy, it will be left in the dust as the PS3’s power truely comes online… you hear of Metal Gear Solid 4 filling the Blu-Ray disc… if thats true, its just a matter of time before XBOX cant deliver any more performance than it already has. The only thing to compete is sadly a Xbox 720, or whatever they are going to call it.
Dude 360 has 3 good games wtf is all this about we have all the gammes the ya great titles and i love 360 but come on get real…halo GoW, and what else..?????ummm…idk Dead rising….ummm….idk from top of my head but thats my point ps3 may not have the best but Haze Ut3 (1st) Resistance1 and 2 Socom, Ratchet and Clank come on 360 has bout the same amount other than that nothing except u pay for ur online.
ok first off. the Xbx 360 is not running at full power. it has far better graphic possibilities than the PS3. the only that sounds amazing for the PS3 is the Cell chip, but programmers don’t like programing for it. Like the dreamcast the PS3 is far beyond its time. except for the part about dreamcast being awesome. Because the PS3 is not. The reason it sold as many as it did was because it was a cheap blue-ray player, that you cannot deny, look at any spec sheet they compare in some places, the Cell chip is the reason the PS3 is falling behind.if you can correct me please do.
not running on full power, thats why it overheats every few months…this is a perfect example of someone talking BS just to act smart
lol.. nice
its not because its being run at max. its because people play it for DAYS!!!! the only reason PS3 hasn’t had any overheating problems is because people don’t care enough to play it for days at a time…
The xbox 360 may or may not be running flat out, though something has to be said for the fact that as games get bigger the medium they come on will have to get larger. Not just release the games on multiple discs (Lost Odyssey) What the hell? Next Gen, Multiple DVD’s no thanks. At least with blu ray i can put it on one disc. I don’t want more than one disc to sratch. This is why i hate PC games. Multiple Discs. I am not going to be downloading 32GB off a server anytime soon. That would take me an entire week, and take a large chunk of my DL limit.
There needs to be some sort of higher capacity unit. Beit Disc or Flash cards.
My 60GB PS3 can do both :P my XBOX 360 can RRoD
Second Xbox is goin ok though.
OK you bring a good point, BUT blue-ray is slow, game developers actualy have to load data to the PS3s HDD. I don’t really mind the multi-disk because I play PC games and I did own a PSX and PS2 they had alot of them. You must also admit atleast microsoft dosent jus sit around all day and say Yeah we are releasing this *caugh* PS3s “Home” or whatever *caugh* lol. But again every console has its good and its bad parts. The PS3 happens to have more than the others right now.
BTW RRoD not that horrible you can home fix it. just heat it up.
I love it when the PS3 die hards come to the 360 site to put the system down. One of the most anticipated games since Halo3 is GTA4 and it was seriously delayed because of the PS3. Not because of its graphics, content or anything but just because its a bitch to work with. Sony execs are a bunch of smart fuckers though. If Billy Gates had thought of paying off one of the biggest department chains in North America (Walmart *cough cough* ) you’d be making fun of the 360 still? Don’t be so sure. Have your Blu-gay. I prefer a system that performs and developers love to work with rather than movies with annoying interactive menus any day.
Go Blu-Gay Yay!!
