HD-DVD Movies No Longer Available?

Posted by The Ori

You have the External HD-DVD unit? Well, read this:

I went to Best Buy Today to see what they had in stock. They’ve been offering 30% off all HD-DVD software; that includes movies. I go to the “Next Generation” section to find nothing but Blu-Ray movie discs. So, I think to myself, hmm, they must have them on clearance somewhere. So, I ask the salesman; “Where are your HD-DVD Movies?” He replies; “They’re right here. They’re being shipped back to the studios, so this is your last day to purchase any HD-DVD software, or Hardware, it’s all going back.”

He continued to explain the 50.00 gift card refund program, and they (Best Buy) need all the funds they can get to FUND the gift card program. So, they’re basically selling all HD-DVD related items back to their supplier.

If I would have known that I can’t even buy left over stock, I would have taken the HD-DVD player back within the 30-day period, because the announcement was made three weeks after I bought a Set-Top player. The salesperson told me at that time, that I should bring it back. So, anyone who bought the 360s’ external unit for 49.99, and had no movies to begin with, is going to be a little upset about that.

So, where to purchase HD-DVDs? Ebay, Half, and wherever else. This is a big disappointment. Maybe someday, HD-DVDs will be like gold, hard to find, and expensive to buy; since it will be scarce. I hope not, I still have my 5-free HD movie rebate out there!

I’ve been trying to supplement my hd-dvd collection by buying as many cheap (less than 9.99) hd-dvd from fry’s so far I’ve gotten about 25 for less than 10 bucks but they are drying up fast!

So Ori, does that mean you bought the HD-DVD drive and sent away for the 5 free dvd’s to arrive in the mail? So are you betting on whether you’ll get them or not? Bestbuy website has most all hd-dvd stuff listed as not available or coming soon. That’ll probably disappear soon I bet.

BB may have them listed on their web site, but I went there, they were all packed up to be shipped back. They don’t have any HD DVDs anymore as of yesterday.

I didn’t care too much about it LOSING for format war, because I got the player CHEAP, and a 1080p model. The thing I did not know was that a major retailer like Best Buy would return ALL their un-sold movies, further screwing people that bought players. I have maybe seven HD titles, which is fine, but at least keep what was out there OUT THERE so we can buy it all up.

There are still places that sell HD-DVD. I checked K-Mart, and they’re at FULL RETAIL prices. I hate K-Mart, they seemingly have no idea what prices are anywhere else in the world. I never buy technology there, EVER! They are so way of base with prices… They kept the XB360 external HD-DVD player at 199.99 even when M$ dropped the price TWICE, Kmart did not comply with the price drops. They only went to the 49.99 when HD-DVD was over. They didn’t drop prices on the consoles either, and from what I know, they are REQUIRED to drop it to what M$ says, they don’t.

Also, yeah; I got a return from Toshiba for the 5-Free movies, I forgot the UPC… They said all had to do was have it sent back to them, with that letter I got, post-marked by April 10th, to still get the movies. So, I sent it back in, and we’ll see what happens. That’s like 50.00 worth of movies (at todays prices on-line, used), thus making my player even cheaper yet. With the movie rebate, and what not, I paid maybe 100.00 for the player (HD-A30); if that, and that not a problem for me, I can make that in two hours.

You forget to include the UPC? Damn it. You could of had the movies by now then if you got a response from them. Now you have to wait some more and hopefully they still have some left in stock if they haven’t started to melt the damn things to salvage the materials to make other products or regular dvd’s or other things.
