Microsoft in GTA IV Panic?

Posted by The Ori

It’s not that simple: it’s not even a question of which is the better console as it certainly looks like the Xbox 360 version will be the superior buy. It’s because a large proportion of GTA’s fans aren’t traditional gamers. They’re casual gamers who couldn’t resist the style, flair and gameplay offered by Rockstar, and added a GTA to their library of Need for Speed, SingStar and FIFA.  So as it is, millions of GTA fans are not up to speed on the console war thing. They don’t care which format has the best games, offers the superior online service, or has the more proficient hardware. They see GTA, and they think PlayStation.  All the GTA series were original Sony platform releases, till now.

A line of dialogue was said; and that must scare Microsoft to death. It came from the mouth of a twenty something year old electrician as he installed a car stereo for a mate. He said “I bought my PS3 to play GTA IV”.   (Well, so what; I bought my PS3 for the Ace Combat series, and that backfired on me, Konami didn’t make any for PS3.)

That wasn’t the comment of a fanboy, or an educated decision by a gaming enthusiast who had weighed up all the pros and cons of the two systems: it was simply all he knew. There was a GTA coming out, so he went and bought a PlayStation. Microsoft is desperate to change that mentality, but what started as a broad plan has seemingly deteriorated into panic.

PS3 is the better console you must be dumb to say that 360 is the superior buy, it will be if you are a retarded that is. PS3 has much more to offer then box of fail 360…I got all three new console and PS3 is the best choice, wish i could afford buying games though, Hack that machine already!

i agree i also own both the ps3 and xbox, compare their specs and ps3 beats it on every front. also big things are planned for the ps3, whereas xbox seems to have grinded to a halt.

I’m sick of the PS3. Everyone’s like “The PS3 is Awesome” and “The PS3 is Great”. The F*** it is! It’s basicly the same thing as a PS2, but upgraded hardware. The Wii? A differant way to play the games. The 360? Better online support. At the end of the day, You’ll miss out if you get a PS3, so you’d get a Wii or 360.
Care to differ?

Considering how long the 360 has been out the ps3 is not any better in terms of power, graphics etc…..they sony have had years to make it to the next step up but have only managed to make a comparible model…..had the ps3 been out for over 2 years and the 360 only recently been launched microsoft would have also had plenty of time to borrow ideas and technology, change them a bit and resell it

Yeah but developing a console takes much more time as each part of the hardware is designed to work with the rest in harmony. Too fast a processor without enough memory or too much memory without enough processors or not a strong enough graphics chip to support the processor and your console will suffer in the end.

Any of the three companies can borrow some things like the way Sony added motion control towards the end - the sixaxis controller. They we’re messing with the controller throughout from the first version - that boomerang type, so it’s no surprise that they felt like changing the controller and taking a page out of Nintendo’s console.

A console isn’t as easy to design as your computer. It’s specifically geared up to perform by having it’s parts chosen from the ground up in the development process. It’s not a matter of ooh they got this fancy chip or something on their machine, let’s copy it. No you can’t since it’s not part of the initial design, it would be impossible to copy any hardware aspects. It would probably mean starting from scratch again since you would be building a new model. Plus the hardware is all proprietary, so only certain companies can get copies of the hardware and use it commercially. You can’t “borrow” technology in sense. They can only make comparable, competitive hardware, and that’s what it is, a competitive comparable model.

Both consoles are top of the line in graphics and processing power. Games look amazing on both, processing power - until you get a benchmark on both you can’t argue all that much with it.

yh but, get a game from when the ps2 first came out and then get a brand new ps2 game that came out a week ago and look at the difference, xbox has had 2 years to improve and the ps3 a year and the ps3 is still slightly better, the ps3 will be the best console out by the end of the year

Yes, since the 399.99 PS3 came out, the 40GB model, it has out sold the 360 the past few months. There is a price drop coming in the US, again, since the UK price drop.

Also as note: The PS3 will not make the 360 an obsolete console, just because it has Blu-Ray. The XB360 us is a game console, not a multi use one like the PS3 is.

Considering you pay a monthly fee you would expect something for that fee, besides just being able to play online.

Comment by The Ori

There is an upside too: I have gotten my 50.00 back every year in the form of FREE downloads; that being game content (maps, missions, plug-ins) or marketplace games (XNA, Arcade). You just have to keep posted on when the titles and content are made available for free. They may not be what you really WANT, but free is free when it is free, so take it for free, before it is not free anymore.

Sony’s on-line play is FREE, but you get nothing else for free yet. No free games, no free content either. So, there is an upside and downside to both.

Well for example for Motorstorm, they’ve released added levels/maps/routes, vehicles, vehicles skins, for free. There’s free stuff out there. Of course there’s better stuff for a one time fee. There’s also arcade style simple games and old school games that you pay for to download. It boils down to that if you’re only after the online play it’s either you pay for it or you don’t. In the case of the xbox live if you don’t care for the extra stuff and you only want to play the game online head to head against other people you miss out if you factor in that the $50 counts towards that content. On PS3 you play for free, get some free stuff, better stuff if you want it, pay for it, if not then you don’t lose out paying for something you don’t utilize or want necessarily.

The real reason Microsoft won’t bring Blu-ray to the Xbox: HDi.

Microsoft has a popular gaming console and an operating system that is HDi compatible. It also has a group of developers working on HDi applications, and a 360-accessible HD video library that could feasibly be outfitted with next-gen interactivity features. All that’s left is the dog and pony show needed to convince content providers that HDi-enhanced content and Microsoft’s video outlets are key to making HD video downloads a viable revenue stream.

Microsoft stepped up to deliver iHD (later renamed HDi), which was a trademarked implementation of HD DVD’s XML markup language. Toshiba liked it. They made HDi functionality a standard for HD DVD players, and eventually partnered with Microsoft to expand HDi’s reach by founding the Advanced Interactivity Consortium. The primary goal of this group was forging industry relationships to further promote HDi in emerging outlets like downloadable and streaming media.

he deal gave HD DVD its competitive next-gen features, but here’s the rub: Microsoft didn’t need physical media to implement HDi. All of HDi’s interactive bells and whistles could theoretically be applied to downloadable video content, as long as a runtime environment was available. Even as the disc format war raged on, elements of HDi’s runtime environment showed up in Microsoft products like the Xbox 360 and Vista.

I don’t know why people try and start a console war every time a opportunity comes.
As a ex 360 owner, ex wii owner and now a ps2 owner, i can say that in terms of power the ps3 wins, in terms of fun the wii wins and in terms of online play the 360 wins. So no console is an all out winner.
As for GTA4, I heard from my local game shop that news from Rockstar was that they complained to sony because there isn’t enough space on the blu ray for this game!!!
so what the hell did they say to microsoft!!
As for picking a console for last ability then the ps3 wins hands down due to the different things it has to offer.

Why is it that everytime the online play comparison comes out the 360 has the better hand? Guys I have a 360 and a PS3 and I have never gone online with the 360 because I don’t want to pay for that service, it should be free like the PS3. Taking that on account I think the PS3 wins. Not to mention the $100 wireless adapter I would have to buy cause I don;t have the 360 next to my computer to hook it up with the 3 foot cable.

Where does this story/posting come from? What’s the source of this? Word of mouth, website?

People aren’t all geeks and hardcore gamers and on the net 24/7 and up to date on every single techbit and detail that occurs on the net. If at all they only know what they hear and see from those that are more educated. As far as the GTA Series goes, they only know that it is on Sony’s machine. They don’t follow the saga that 360/PS3 have online extra, or this one will have this and this one will have that, they only follow that it’s coming out, and when it comes out they’ll go buy it. When that such date arrives all they know from past history might be that they played most all if not all their GTA games on the Playstation 2. Nevermind the fact that there have been two small filler games that came out on the PSP’s handheld device. It’s the perception and history that follows and draws the masses. Kinda like the politics people only remember main parts they don’t remember every single little detail and battle along the way to the finish line.

I think gaming right now is fun… But, in a few years holodisk will come out. Those can hold up to 1 tb of space. Its also the size of a regular dvd. Just imagine gaming with that much space. Not to mention you also need a good processor to compliment it. Heres the link: http://www.holodisk.net

As for this flaming about consoles…Stop whining and go get all 3. If you need to find a Wii, let me know. I live in the middle of nowhere and there’s always some in stock. I got rid of my PS3 a while ago, but I’m going to get another when the MGS4 bundle comes out…Otherwise, everything else I like is either on the Wii or 360…I’m playing Lost Odyssey right now…PS3 doesn’t have any good exclusives that are out now besides Resistance, and I tore that game up when I had my PS3. So get all 3 and stop whining. I got GTA 4 reserved at Gamestop cause I get a Duffel Bag, a Safe with keys, and the game. I even get a receipt! Ooh! I like 360 best out of all 3 because achievements make me hungry for gaming…It’s worse than cigarettes…

I’ll wait for it to come out before I buy either console (whichever SF:HD is best on I expect), but I’m sure the X360 version won’t have a half hour/6gb+ install!

Yeah except you get rewarded later on in that game with shorter load times, then on the console without the install. It’s only in the beginning of the game that the install doesn’t seem to make sense.

umm thats cause the xbox 360 version will have less data on it . ps3 has bluray so it will hold more so it has to install some to speed up load times.

Both ps3 and 360 are good consoles, I’ve always had playstations, but this time the ps3 is too expensive, but it does make up for it, it has more features than the 360, but as the 360 was at a decent price for what i wanted i was thinking of getting one. But then i SAW the FAILURE RATES. Great console but a shitty design, i dont get how it fails so much , it has like a million holes to ventalate it. XBOX 360 FALURE RATE 33%, PS3 FAILURE RATE 3%. i Know quite a few people that have there 360 fail on them, but i havent seen anyone with a broken ps3 yet. Sone have put so much more effort in to the ps3, i wish microsoft had too.

If they get there act together which looks they are doing so with updates; they keep expanding the remote play functions so there’s always the option of being able to play your ps3 games on the road from your psp, and being able to stream your videos and music to your psp from it too. Can’t play your xbox360 on the road or away from home unless you carry it with you.

PS3 price drop is for competition and because they gutted the PS2 CPU/GPU chips out of it, plus the parts are lower priced now so it costs less to manufacture.

Comment by The Ori
2008-03-28 08:46:19

Removing the EE+GS chip saved them maybe 30.00. Since PS2 is STILL IN PRODUCTION, it isn’t like they’re making those chips just for the PS3 at a premium price, so, their production costs for those chips were as low as they could be anyway.

In any case, I am about done with my XB360, it has frozen up on me to many times during games where YOU have to save, and well, when you got an HOUR in and did not save, you lose all that progress. It only happens when I play RPGs (Oblivion, Two Worlds). So, I am about ready to drop kick it out the window. Thing is, the games I like are NOT on PS3, so mine SITS THERE and collects dust except when playing blu-ray movies. I am going to sell my PS3 and get a set-top BR-D player, because that’s all I use it for.

As far as playing PS3 games ON THE ROAD on a PSP? Yeah, you show me… Maybe you meant PS1? the PSP hasn’t the power or graphics capability to play a PS3 game on it. Even steaming the game (like playing PC games on PS3 -via- streaming) the lag would be horrible.

The PS3 is not the superior console in any way, shape or form. People who think that are just ignorant. Neither one of them are superior.

Comment by LastmanOut
2008-03-29 16:04:38

Allegedly it was 27 or so bucks if I recall correctly, but the bigger cuts came from the lower cost of the parts like the blue-ray diodes, and moving the cell processor down from a 90nm technology to a 65nm technology, kinda like the same thing Microsoft ’s doing with the Xbox, moving from a 90nm to a 65nm. Saves money, cuts costs of production down.

PSP doesn’t have the power to play them natively, but it does allow you to play some in a ported down manner. So far as the only one I’ve heard mention of - is the game Lair; by reducing the visual quality down to the psp’s size, the game is playable by some accounts. Some said it works others said it lags too much so it’s an interesting case study for a first implementation. I haven’t heard of other games that feature this yet, but if it’s already possible with this game then it’s possible to have this with other games in the future; if the game developers code it in.
This was on the http://www.psp-hacks.com site last year.

http://www.psp-hacks.com/2007/09/02/lair-psp-remote-play/

And yes you can also play any PS1 classics you have on the console itself.

Neither one of them are superior.

I Agree with that. You can argue about the lack of HDMI for the early xbox360 adopters, you can argue about durability of the console, or about sony releasing a firmware upgrade that might cause more harm then good, but for general speaking there both on a level field.

You ever think of taking like a blow dryer, putting it on high heat, aim it at the vents in the console and hope it burns up and you get the triple-red-light malfunction indicator of death. Then you can get another since you’re still under warranty. :)

Ok basically i own a 360 and a wii, To be honest the ps3 may have the same graphics as 360 now but when the 360 first came out (saints row ect.) the graphics were SHIT compared to now. You might aswell admit that when the ps3 gets to 3 years old like the 360 it WILL be better, but by then a new xbox will be out and it will be better than the ps3.

And just for you idiots out there: Microsoft are not gonna make xbox live free if they have so many people paying for it!!!! IDIOTS! Why would they just throw away money like that haha.

So you’re saying since the PS3 came out in 06, add 3 years, then it would be 2009, so next year when the PS3’s game library is on par graphics wise with the xbox 360’s graphcis - Microsoft is going to release a new version the xbox 360?

You know what that would mean… try Sega DreamCast in a nutshell.

They update the console’s hardware revision every year. This year Microsoft is supposeably adding HDMI ports to the 360. It got the head start, but that doesn’t mean the PS3 won’t catch up to it.
But, the graphics have been the same since the 360 came out, so the guy at the top makes no sense. You Phail.
Wii and 360 FTW.
