Best Buy to Give $10M in gift cards to HD DVD purchasers!

Posted by The Ori

Great News!

Best Buy today said that it will be sending out $50 gift cards to more than 200,000 of its U.S. customers who purchased HD DVD players and Xbox 360 HD DVD units before February 23 of this year.

Best Buy is the latest company in line that wants to ease your pain (and hopefully  get you to quickly transition to Blu-ray), in case your high-def bets were placed on HD DVD. In prepared statement, the company’s president and chief operating officer, Brian Dunn, said that “the DVD format war has divided our customers in a way we haven’t seen since Betamax took on VHS more than 20 years ago.”

In case you are wondering why Saturday, February 23 is the cut-off date: It is the end of the week, in which Toshiba announced to cancel HD DVD (February 19).

I was one of the lucky ones (if you call it that) to buy a Toshiba HDA30 in January of  this year, so I should be getting one of these cards!   If you bought the 360 external unit at 49.99, and you do happen to get one?  You got a free player!

Ya I’m so glad i bought a PS3, even though i had the 360, rather than buying that add-on.

Ohh wow, comments are back on!! Is it because no one cared to sign up in forum just to add their two cents to everything that got posted over the past month or two or how ever long it’s been?

Was funny seeing you post a news report and the seeing no replies in the forum. :) Quite funny.

Yeah free HD-DVD drive, if you bought it at $50 bucks. My friend bought it when it was at a $100 or $80 or so, he shouldn’t be too bad. Question is are you still going to recieve the free 5 HD-DVD’s if you bought the drive and mailed away the form in Jan-Feb. At least then you get something to use the drive with, or you got a paperweight unless you have some other HD-DVD titles. Well at elast they should be cheap now. Ouch correction, I am legend on the Bestbuy website is up for 27.99 blu-ray, 34.99 HD-DVD that’s rough.

Oh yeah, quite funny. No, it just goes to show they’ll come here to be ignorant, and not where they can be banned immediately. Still, I have all the power here to delete and ban IP addresses, so; so be it.

Praise be the Ori…

*doesn’t praise the Ori…*

Right.., anyway, that rebate sucks if you ask me, unless you got the 49.99 external.. Rather trade the bitch in towards blu-ray.. Got a PS3 though personally, so I guess I’m clear..

Must suck for some people..

It really doesn’t suck for anyone. HD-DVd movies will come way down in price, and there are a lot, so I will be buying a lot of them. I got Smallville season 6 on HD DVD for 30.00!

I have had a PS3, so I have been in the clear, never sucked for me.

They should come down in price, but some places might keep them high to try and salvage some cash since their going to be a scare item for those that actually want some of those titles to justify having some of the now debunk HD-DVD players. Like I said in the above post, I am legend on the Bestbuy website is up for 27.99 blu-ray, 34.99 HD-DVD that’s not exactly a bargain for the now soon to be extinct format. Of course this is only one example, I didn’t look and compare all of the titles that are out on both formats and see if the Blu-ray ones are all lower priced then the HD-DVD ones.

The BB in my area didn’t even carry “I am Legend” on HD-DVD. Even if they did, they have a store wide reduction on all HD-DVD software at 30% off, so “IaL” at 34.99 minus 30% is about $24.49 anyway. That is CHEAPER than the 27.99 release price for the Blu-Ray title.

The Tuesday through Saturday pricing on release titles are always cheaper than the retail price. However, when that Sunday comes around, they are at sticker price. The retail on the BR-D “IaL” was 34.99, and, as I said, they did not even carry it in HD-DVD format, or I would have bought it at the 30% off price at 24.49.

Well that’s kinda interesting to know about BB. Thanks.

I was going with what I saw on the website. I just finished pulling it back up to the I am Legend search results; on HD-DVD it’s now listed as 29.99 which is cheaper then the 34.99 BR counterpart. Except you have to wait, the reason it wasn’t at the BB you went to was because according to the BB website it says release date for the HD-DVD version is April 8. Yet the BR and Standard versions both got released on March 18. Go figure, not sure why they didn’t just release it on the same date.

The reason why they are sent out the rebates is to get people to buy them… HD players are useless now since they will no longer be made after this year because blu-ray won the war :/

Rebates only apply if you bought one already, (before Feb. 23) buying one now, you don’t get a rebate.
