February 18, 2008Toshiba Dropping HD-DVD - Blu-Ray Has Won!?
Posted by The Ori
Toshiba recently announced they are dropping HD-DVD, but will continue to manufacture some accessories and devices, but not for long. This is all due to major movie studios switching to BR-D. However, BR-D is not in the clear just yet, as it will compete with the Internet, where downloading is as easy as using a remote.
Also; Rumors were circulating that Microsoft is set to dump HD DVD and bring out a Blu ray Xbox 360 add-on by as early as May 2008.
Insiders at Microsoft in the USA have told SmartHouse that Microsoft have already configured a standalone Blu-ray player that can be connected to Xbox 360, and that subject to internal marketing and sales approvals, the model could be on sale within 3 months.
The Company has also been said to be working on a built in Blu-ray player, however, insiders are claiming that Microsoft sees the HD format battle moving online with consumers offered 1080p movie and content files as a download, as opposed to having to buy HD or Blu ray devices. If this is true, again, another kick in the face from M$, where future units have better features than previous models. Sony may have re-hashed the PS2 over and over again, but they never added a jump in technology like this.

wooot 1st post i am tha best haha….
bout time blu ray came to tha 360 =]
wat a load of bollox, ps3 dumps all over the 360 lmfao at u 360 boyz!!!
From that statement I take it you only have a PS3, poor pathetic you. 360 is superoir over the PS3 even without the blu ray. So if you dont have them both then you dont have an opinion that matters. If you do and you still diss the 360 then your just ignorant and you need to go back to an Atari and work your way up to the big boys console.
i have both ps3 and 360… the PS3 pisses all over the 360 in many ways!
price u get everything with ps3 u dont have to buy extras to try and come close to the ps3 like u do with 360
online play : ps3 FREE 360 PAY more money!!!
better gameplay and graphics : ps3 blu-ray games loads of data 360 daul layer 8.4 gig max!
red ring of death! u dont get this shit with ps3!!! the only thing that every goes wrong with sony consoles is the laser! £40 max 360 red ring all the time and now even the “elite” piece of junk that was ment to have fixed the RROD is also breaking and will still mess up coz its made by microsoft! what made u think 360 was gonna be good take a look at windows! its the most unreliable piece of junk ever made!!
basicly PS3 OWNS the 360!!
The part where you say the graphics are better is false in a few ways. Number one, most the games are ports to PS3 from XB360 developers. Only the ground up made video games have good graphics.
Also, your space argument is kind of weak, because the games for BR-D are not taking up the entire space anyway, and XB360 seems to be doing a good job with DVD-9. SO, if there is 30GB of space on a Blu-Ray disc, and they are only using less that half, then there’s no argument there.
Also, your post was laced with profanity, it was removed. You post more of the same, you will be placed on the blacklist. I keep warning you people to keep it clean, this is NOT your house, or YOUR playground.
ok well firstly soz for the bad langauge! however im pretty sure that most the people using this site know more than the couple words i used!
the graphics on the ps3 are much better and also better still they can be played in full hd due to hdmi output on the ps3 and not the 360!
i have COD4 on both consoles and it is MUCH better all round on the ps3! and i say it again! FREE ONLINE PLAY!
ok the bluray isnt bein used to its full potential atm but it is there as standard u not gonna have to go buy a BR drive and spend yet more money on extras for ya 360!
also with the prices of ps3 dropping thru the floor atm the ps3 is killing the 360! they keep bringin new bits aand consoles out but still not close to the ps3! and do u know of any broken ps3s…? no over heating… no RROD… maybe by now a broken laser but that is all! even with all these fake hacks comin out for the ps3 it still holds on and doesnt brick or break!
and also… the ps3 is helping to cure cancer… i as a smoker could do with this in few years! :P
Your HDMI producing true 1080p is also pointless, as the XB360 is capable of 1080p with their HDMI units, AND, 1080p is able to be produced with component cables, this was also discussed many times.
Look, I own both consoles, but I always end up buying the XB360 title when the game is available for both, because that usually means the PS3 version is a PORT (look that up please).
With COD4 for PS3? Yes, that was a ground-up write, so you made my point exactly. That was not a port from XB360, still, the XB360 graphics are a little more free flowing and not as jittery. A higher frame rate does not mean better graphics, just how many times second you can draw frames, and if half of them are the SAME frame, then what’s the point?
Argue all you want, this mine is better than YOURS argument has been around since the SECOND club was fashioned from a piece of wood. This topic is not about what is better anyway, you people always turn it into that, and for what? Are you getting a hefty REWARD for your efforts? Sony pay you very well for each word? I doubt it, everyone talks and talks, and it’s just their personal opinion, then you people take it personally? Like you invented it along side with Sony? No, so your console is NOT better than mine, and mine is not better than yours, it’s what I chose, which is BOTH… I use my Xbox360 90% more than my PS3 for games, because I don’t like PORTS.
firstly look me up before u start talking to me like some nooby retard! i know what a bloody port is so on that yeah u made ya point! so lots of games are just ports but i personaly have prefered sony since day 1! the psx was amazing and ps2 was a lot better then there came the xbox… well i never had 1 untill the 360 came out so cant judge that but from what i did see of it it was rather good but in my opinion the 360 was just a waste of money the only downfall i feel for ps3 is the extremly high price on games and no modchip or cfw yet!
actually framerteisprety important. It makes all the difference in a game that jumps to a perfectly running game. ps3 cannot be jittery compared with the frame rate of the 360. cmon now son be reasonable
Son? Ok umm, DAD, since kids are better , yeah, that’s WAY better than you at video games (we all know this, right?), here is what I saw.
GRAWII for PS3, movement was jittery, plain as DAY! My XB360 version is smooth, and transitional. So, daddy, I think you need to start doing side by side comparisons, because I do, and that’s why I end up with the XB360 version over the PS3. Argue all you want, because you will lose, and you will send me to my room without supper, right? DADDY!!!! I have seen this with many XB360 to PS3 ports, and THEY SUCK! Turok looked pretty good on both consoles, but I got to go with the 360 version for overall performance. Remember, I have BOTH the 360 and PS3, and I have 6 PS3 games and 18 XB360 games, so, there you go…
Can I go play now, DADDY?
ha wow this escaladed alot since i posted… i wasn’t dissin either console, if i was i wouldn’t own them both. I was a PS fan and never and xbox. only reason i bought the 360 was b/c i had the money and the ps3 wasn’t out yet. i got both now and i still like my 360 better. ya you pay to play online, but whatever, its worth what you get. in my opinion the ps3 is the blu ray drive, memory card ports, and being able to copy movies/music/pictures with ease. the store is eh ok i guess. feel sorry for people on non hd tvs tryin to read that small print from the ‘web paged’ store. the bluetooth and 7 controllers is nice, even with the built in battery concept. about the 360…. tons of game demos, live arcade, movies, tv shows, mail with voice/text/picture is nice, in-game dashboard for music, messages, and more. I like being able to listen to my own music, ps3 needs to get with the program on their fw. achievements, in-game popups for finished demos where u can go right to it instead of quitting game to xmb and then loading game along with alot of other useful popup info. like i said, i like them both but the 360 gets alot more use especially since i have loaded the same exact game on both consoles simutaneously and the 360 loaded all games faster (skate/cod4/madden) i own them on the 360, friend had em on ps3, glad i bought them on the right console. most games will come out on all consoles now but i had to have em both for the ones that are for a single console only. both have pros and cons but if you know both systems very well and write it all out, there will be more pros on the 360 with more cons on the ps3.
Does anyone blame Microsoft for not including a HD-DVD drive standard in the Xbox360?
Does anyone blame that as the reason there wasn’t broader adoption of the format where Sony included Blu-ray on it’s PS3?
Can we blame Microsoft for yet another failure?
Are they going to offer you guys a rebate or some deal for those that bought a HD-DVD player add-on????
I am really starting to see the horrible pattern Microsoft has been taking with this console. They are practically making you buy a new console every year, and that’s not right. That’s why I got a 2-Year warranty with mine, so if it does break, I get the latest technology. Still, them now thinking of changing to BR-D is not fair to all those people who have the HD-DVD Ad on.
Just three weeks ago, I bought a 1080p Toshiba (A30) HD-DVD player, and I am actually thinking of taking it back, because it’s a failed medium. Plus, I think people should take them back before you can’t take them back… Once they announce it’s done, stores may not take returns.
Racist and Horrible comments from this person.
Official Toshiba Announcement Tomorrow? - BDA Welcomes MS and Toshiba.
Despite Red’s inability to make any real public statement, Japanese publication Nikkei has it that Toshiba president Atsutoshi Nishida will be announcing the final discontinuation of HD DVD tomorrow, as well as halted sales of hardware and media by March (as in days from now). Apparently Toshiba will pull its units from retail shelves, but has no intention to give burned early adopters any refunds.
Frank Simonis (Blu-ray Disc Association’s spokesperson) said: “Of course we have always said that Toshiba and Microsoft, and any other company, is more than welcome to join the Blu-ray Disc Association. We are an open organisation, with an open disc standard. If Toshiba decides to drop HD DVD we would extend the hand of friendship to them, they are always welcome to join,”.
“Microsoft could easily put Blu-ray inside the Xbox,” said Simonis. “From my understanding Microsoft did an early evaluation and the Xbox has a similar processor to the PS3 so it will be perfectly capable of decoding a Blu-ray disc. “So technically it could do it. All Microsoft would have to do is acquire a BD licence,” he said.
Simonis dismissed the notion that Sony might be uncomfortable with Microsoft joining the Blu-ray camp. Some say that it’s unlikely that Sony would want Microsoft to put a Blu-ray drive in the Xbox - because then it would be an even bigger threat to the PS3. But Simonis said that Sony would not be able to stop such a move.
xbox is still a waste of money, i mean its not bad enough that you have to buy a console + internet u also have to buy a service to use ur internet wut kind of bullcrap is that!?!
Every year since XB360, so far, I have gotten my 49.99 back in free downloads and content. There are at least three free game downloads a year, be it an arcade title, or XBLA title. So sure, you do not pay for Sony on-line, but you PAY for every single FULL VERSION download. With Xbox Live, you at least get a few freebies a year, I have 08 total free downloaded games for two years, plus the free Oblivion content (it’s not free right now). You may only get a few days to do it, but hey, you snooze you lose…
LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!!! I MEAN LEAVE TOSHIBA ALONE!!
lol just have to say damn ori, you made your round on this comment board lol. nice
Here is Toshiba’s announcement that they’re out of the HD-DVD business:

Two more posts deleted; Again, if you people are going to act like babies, you’re posts will be deleted, and if you continue, added to the site’s blacklist. Especially when you say something that wasn’t even on topic, I never said SONY was going to lose, so, point that out; that’s called illiteracy , when you can’t read…
dont forger all the PORN is going to hd so its not over yet
“M$ can easily put a BD drive indside their xbox” - are you serious?? if they put in a BD drive, that would make it a whole new console! it’s just plain stupid to put in just the BD drive so that it can compete with the ps3. if M$ is going to make a BD drive built in, they are for sure putting other new things in like a better processor or GPU to make the move worth it! but the 360 is still only in it’s 3rd year and making that big of a leap will surely pisses off a lot of people! so…NO, M$ will not put in a BD drive inside 360 at least for now!
360 has a similar processor to the ps3?? everybody should know by now that they are by far different with each other. 360 is more pc oriented but Cell BE for ps3 is a new breed multicore processor which at the moment the true power hasn’t being tapped yet!
lastly, for people saying that DVD9 is still good enough, you’re in denial! think about a multi-DVD game like lost oddessy! that won’t be happenning to the BD-based pas3!
M$ can easily put the BR-D in the XB360, it has nothing to do with the CPU, if it did, all set-top BR-D players would have CELL CPUs in them. Both CPUs are POWER PC based Processors. The only difference is the PS3 is a Cell CPU with 6 SPEs for gaming and one General Purpose as the Micro Controller. The XB360 is a three core, General Purpose CPU all the way around. Both are similar processors, believe it, do some research, please, that’s all I ask.
There have never been multi game DVDs for any Microsoft console… DVD9 has been good enough for now, because a PS3 game without all the FLUFF wouldn’t take up half a Blu-Ray disc.
How can M$ get blu-ray? Doesn’t Sony have to give the rights for M$ to use it?
Blu-ray was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group of companies representing consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion picture production.
Ok, so this “association” consists of Sony, Matsushita (Panasonic), Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, and Samsung. Spearheaded by NP Infotech. Hitachi and Samsung have been the primary suppliers if all M$ game console DVD drives. Recently, LG was named one of the newly contracted drive suppliers for Xbox360, besides BenQ, which is Philips. So, here you have the five major contributors to XBOX drives, since the first console. Thompson doesn’t make any 360 DVD drives, because they were the worst with XB1.
SO, how is Sony going to stop LG, Hitachi, Samsung, Phillps, or even Thompson from making a 360 version BR-D? Also, if the “association” says, they welcome Toshiba and M$ with open arms, then that can’t mean to come in, but you can’t have anything.
Sony began the push for BR-D, and if it were not for BR-D, the 1080p HD-television would not have come out so quickly either, as SONY also had the first 1080p HDTV, now look at all the people making them.
Even with Set Top BR players, Sony doesn’t have the exclusive. They did at first with the first well over 1000.00 player, but now; Samsung, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, LG, Sharp, Lite-On (and iLO?), Mitsubishi, Funai, JVC, Loewe, Denon, and Daewoo also have set-top BR-D players now . So, they are allowing other people to license the product. If Sony denies M$ the use of the BR-D, then we know they are afraid, and unsure of their product success, and the PS3.
Xboxfounder:
MS opposed Blu-ray because Sony supported it, plain and simple. I was in the room when the decision was made. But they hedged their bets by making the Media player a plug in. They could very quickly have a Blue Ray external plug in just like the HD, if Sony will cooperate.”
“Therein lays the rub. MS, one of the worst co’s to get info out of to make products compatible, needs Sony to help a competitor do just that - compete with a compatible product that depends on the competitor’s intellectual protocol. Sony knows that they cannot justify charging MS a fee that is larger than any other customer. Sony wants to make Blu-Ray ubiquitous so they have shaved down fees as much as possible. So MS must get the same deal as everyone else.”
“What would you do now if you were Sony? The same thing MS has done over the years. Make the technology intentionally incompatible, withhold information, withhold support for design input to make it compatible, etc.”
“We’ll see over the next few months. Either MS will come out with a Blu-ray player, or they will file suit to force Sony to share, in much the same way many others sue MS for the same reasons on Windows compatibility. It will be interesting to watch this unfold.”
I have been a Sony guy from the release of the PS1. Now I have both the 360 and PS3 and have changed my tune. There are many thing that differ about the systems and to compair them is kind of be norrow minded. It’s the games that speak for the systems and should be what’s judged.
Someone mention COD4. Well I hate playing with kids and @ssholes that team kill. Well in the 360 version I can private chat with a buddy of mine so I dont have to listen to them. If I get team killed I can give them bad player reviews and never be matched up with them again. So far the PS3 dont not have those options. Not to mention, the 360 version has better graphics on this game. Yes I have the Elite and am able to have true 1080p.
The DL content of the 360 far exceeds that of the PS3, but that is what we get for paying for the service. MS is able to gather more content for us. Once the PS3 has the HD content I will be interested to see how much things cost.
Speaking of DL content. aHave you even DL a game demo on the PS3? Well first you download it, which takes forever, even on my T1 line. Then you have to install it, which takes even longer. On the 360, you DL in half the time and are playing it imediately.
I dont see the reason to bash either system. I see microsoft trying to make a home system rather than a game console. I am sure that soon enough they will have a web browser and the other small feature PS3 has. I just hope for Sony’s sake, they keep up.
That’s what I kind of been saying, I got both also, and end up buying the 360 game for the graphics. I also agree with you on ALL the points you made about Live! I also said that you do get your money back in the form of freebies, in one way or another. You may only have a few days to get the free one, but hey, it’s free. I also got the 1st episode of Heros, in HD, free. So, 49.99 is worth what you can obtain if you keep your eyes open.
I have also noticed how long it takes to download stuff to PS3, then when done it needs installed (unpacked). With XB360, you download it, and it runs right away. Sony has just taken their console security one step farther with that.
I see Sony charging a price for a premium service in the future, it will be like Live Gold, and what we have now will be Silver.
