Still No Answer For Broken Xbox Live DRMs

Posted by The Ori

The DRM issue with repaired/replaced Xbox360s is not new, but recently, consumerist.com wrote a new article about it. Not only does it look like there won’t be a real solution for this problem any time soon, but the microsoft support is still pretty much clueless about the issue:

Reader Kevin’s XBOX 360 suffered the usual Red Ring of Death, so he sent it in to be repaired. He got back a different XBOX 360 with a different serial number. That would be no big deal, except Kevin has purchased a bunch of content through XBOX Live… content that is no longer fully functional due to Microsoft’s broken DRM.

Here’s a quick summary:
* November 2007: Kevin’s XBOX 360 is replaced, causing his content to lose full functionality. He calls Microsoft.
* Microsoft keeps Kevin on the phone for an hour trying different methods of restoring functionality to his content. Nothing works. They say they will call him back in two weeks.
* They do not call him back, so he calls them. Microsoft makes him repeat the steps he tried the first time he called. They tell him they will call him back in two weeks.
* This cycle repeats twice more before Kevin gets a call from Frank at XBOX escalations. It’s now the second week of January.
* Kevin periodically speaks to Frank. Frank has no answers for him.
* February 7, 2008: Frank tells Kevin that there’s nothing more he can do and, when Kevin asks when he can expect a resolution, Frank says “hopefully sometime in 2008.”

We suggested that Kevin escalate his complaint. He did. This resulted in another call from Frank confirming:
* That he can give me no ETA for when this issue will be resolved.
* That there is nobody I can call for status updates since the team that does ‘relicensing’ does not give updates.
* That they will only provide me with resolution when all my content is relicensed not partial.
* That there is no compensation for the fact this has taken and will likely take months more to resolve.
* That there is nothing more he can do.
* That he ‘hopes’ that it will be resolved shortly.

More bad news, M$ has to get this issue resolved, they’re going to lose business…

I’ve had this issue since June 07, and they just now are fixing it-I think. It’s what I was told anyway. That it takes up to a month and they will call me when it’s been done. DRMs gone, HD DVDs dying, Halo 3s out-What’s left for the 360? Is it dying?

Is there a Halo 4 or some alternate universe or something to continue the Franchise? (Wish full thinking for those halo addicts out there.)

Hopefully as more and more people complain they’ll refine the system or update it so that it’s improved somehow or it’s going to suffer of course.

Wasn’t there a post sometime ago on the frontpage saying Microsoft would consider making a Blu-ray Add-on Drive if the HD-DVD dies out.(Which looks like it’s dying by leaps and bounds everytime a company or entity drops it. - Universal, Netflix, Best Buy.) : )

There’s more titles coming out for it now so there isn’t an argument that it has no games, it has a low fail rate but then again I think most every other console in home console history can probably be placed ahead of the 360 in that category.

Sony also gives you 5 downloads when you buy something from the Sony store. Say the hard drive goes bad on your PS3 system or you upgrade to a bigger hard drive you can download your content over again - you’ll just have to keep track of how many times you’ve downloaded it. Nice workaround instead of that DRM krap.

But there’s hope. Enough firmware updates and changes, and once there’s some standard water cooling or those lain-li cases are out there with Blu-ray add-on drives 360′ll be set.

Yea this was smart, but it was also dumb. Using PS3 proxy you can grab the links from purchased content, make a notepad file to keep the link, and use a ‘free download’ to download it over and over and over again, so it wasn’t smart for the bussiness, but it was in the eyes of this end user, if you get what I mean xD

I think some things this doesn’t work correctly with though, like Home Beta for example. I think that needs to be authenticated per console to work correctly.

But take that with a grain of salt, because I don’t really know if thats for certain or not.

Don’t you have activate warhawk with the bought ownership playstation network account it’s bought with in order to play it? What’s the point of downloading it over and over again if you can’t activate it more then 5 times????????????????

What you can do is, buy the download. That is your first install. Then you can go to someone else’s PS3, create your account there, and download it there, that’s #2. People “share” an account and split the cost 5-ways, then each log-on, and get their download. You can’t do that with XB360…

You can do that yes. Everyone will have a download and copy - on 5 different boxes. Except the in the case of WarHawk and any other game which comes out as well unless their beyond stupid; you will only be able to play it on one console per 24 hours. So the other four people that you shared and split it with will be sitting there hoping you don’t play it for 24 hours so that it clears out of the network log and one of them can login and play. Once one of the consoles is active online the other four are locked out for 24 hours. There is no way to play with your buddies that way, hence it’s still piracy but only one of you - out of five will be playing the game per 24 hours.

Read up why don’t ya.

Watch who you’re speaking to bub, I wasn’t preaching GOSPEL, I was saying what people do, and I said NOTHING about warhawk.

I’m quite happy with my PS3 purchase the longer time goes on. I still love my 360, but it has started losing all the ground I felt it had ahead, although I doubt this will translate much into the general public.

Ha! This is why I never buy anything Microsoft produces. Hurray for for pirated and cracked Windows and free XBOX’s!

If they can’t simply replace the old DRM information on the XBOX Live content, with that of your current one, such as ‘fake’ buying the content again to reproduce the required information, then replace the information on your XBOX Live account, then they need some help in the programming department.. Let alone Microsoft’s DRM is buggy to begin with.. Using it on their Xbox Live shit, that was just retarded. They should of found a new way to protect their content -.-
