January 8, 2008Microsoft’s Xbox could consider Blu-ray support?

As if everything else wasn’t enough:
Microsoft Corp’s Xbox video gaming unit still fully backs Toshiba Corp’s HD-DVD high-definition DVD format but could consider supporting Sony Corp’s rival Blu-ray technology should consumers want it, an executive said on Tuesday. “It should be consumer choice; and if that’s the way they vote, that’s something we’ll have to consider,” Albert Penello, group marketing manager for Xbox hardware said when asked whether Microsoft would support a Blu-ray DVD accessory in the event that HD-DVD failed.
Microsoft does not believe the surprise decision last week by Time Warner Inc unit Warner Bros, the top seller of home movies, to abandon HD-DVD format in favor of Blu-ray should affect sales of its Xbox 360 video game console, Penello said.
“I fundamentally don’t think … this has a significant impact on Xbox 360 versus (Sony’s) PlayStation 3,” Penello told Reuters in an interview at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Well, it may effect sales of the external HD-DVD player…

maybe we will be able to send it in and let them put it in our xbox360 instead of the rumored xbox360 ultimate or whatever its called….but sounds great!
We’ll look on the bright side, games will come in blu-ray so that means extra room and space for games - content, cutscenes, extras bonus, all the extra eye-candy and goodies.
Bad part will be that a game will then be a lot bigger if you rip it. Probably won’t fit on the standard dual layer dvd media. Plus it would also mean yet another xbox version and also means xbox360 would get yet another drive. So back to square one on the trying to hack the firmware of the drive and everything.
It would just be another external unit so that they don’t alienate everyone who already has a 360.
somehow, i doubt MS will install the bluray in the system ..What are all the original owners going to do with there obsolite xbox`s …
IF anything, it would be another External unit.
they could offer and upgrade, at a fee of course and they could convert the original xbox360s to blu ray. hell its only a drive isnt it, its not that hard to do. not like its bigger than a normal drive.
Hahahahaha I told you all Xboxfanboy
PS3 gonna win for sure
LOL… They would probably make us all buy new 360’s for this so that we could not backup our games anymore. M$ really doesn’t care much about it’s customers, their support sucks, their software products are the most buggy on the planet, and their hardware is the most buggy too. The only reason why I bought the 360 vs a PS3 was the ability to run backups. I know that M$ would not promote the product because of the ability of making it use backups, but that is why I bought it, and I am sure there are plenty more that based their decision on the same basis.
i don’t like cheese.
i love cheese
Well cheese is ok….
haha i love the comment about the ps3 winning for sure…lol! this is about a DVD format failing not a video game system xbox is still out selling ps3s like nobody’s business
I just hope that the entire world chooses one format. not like beta and vhs, that would suck if everyone went bluray and only australia wen hd dvd.
as for ps3 vs xbox, the only reason ps1 and ps2 did any good was because you could play copied games, thats what killed the n64 and game cube. I think these days people do mosty base there consoles on if they can play copied games. But what they forget is that if people dont buy any games, game developers stop making games and then there is no more xbox or PS. I must admit I have played copied games, not on my xbox but on pc and PSP, but If I like the game I will buy it.
Let us count the ways Albert Pennello, marketing manager for Xbox hardware, told us in a sitdown that the [Reuters] story was wrong, and when HD DVD really is buried in Microsoft’s mind.
1. The “headline misconstrued the context of what I said.”
2. Microsoft is “not thinking about it.”
3. It is “fairly definitive” Microsoft is not doing it.
4. Microsoft has “no plans” to build anything Blu-ray.
5. Microsoft is “totally committed to HD DVD.”
So just when is HD DVD dead in Microsoft’s eyes? It’s “over when Toshiba says they’re not doing HD DVD anymore.”
Oooh now they want Blu-ray !? MS is soooo slow , so now we are going to buy a external Blu-ray for like 250$ maybe ! Yeah right ! Viva PS3 !
holy crap dude, I love my PS3 but you’re just sad. do you just go around xbox forums putting the system down? I hate M$ but the xbox is an ok console with some great games and to be honest I would buy one right now if I weren’t so scared of the damn failure rate. How many of you guys have experienced a RRoD?
Well let me see , i am on my firts PS3 and 3rd XBOX360 ! In case you didn’t know the XBOX360 has a 35% defect rate! Oooh and Sony is just 0.05% i think so yes i have reason to hate MS !
Well, wanna know the truth? The only reason the Xbox 360 is ahead is beacause it was released earlier to feed gamer’s Next-Gen needs. If 360 was released the same time as PS3, then it would be totally different. 360 would have died long ago. And now the PS3 ($399) is the same price of the 360 ($350 + ~$50 XBL 1yr). Now the PS3 is starting to out sell the 360. Your rain of Red Terror is over, Microsoft! That’s right, they just got off their period.
The only thing keeping 360 alive: Halo. Once people get board… heh, no more Xbox. PS3 has more exclusives anyway.
Nope, my PS3 has never got the RROD. Because it doesn’t break. I mean, from the same people who made WINDOWS did you expect your XBOX 360 to last very long?
Sony wouldn’t let Microsoft use Blu-ray until everyone owns a PS3, Blu-ray is a great PS3 feature and they won’t lose it to MS anytime soon. :D
