Get the Fall ‘07 Update & DivX/XviD Codec On XB360 If Banned or No Live!

Posted by The Ori

First, you need the $SYSTEMUPDATE file. Click here to begin downloading the update folder. Save it as “$SystemUpdate_[date].zip” anywhere on your computer.

Burn it on a CD, or DVD with the content on the ROOT of the disc, power on Xbox360, place disk in tray, power off, then:

  1. Power on the Xbox 360 console.
  2. The update program will start automatically. Select “Yes, update now” and press the A button.
  3. Wait for the update to complete.
  4. The console will reboot and you’re done.

Getting The Codec:
Once you have updated, there are TWO ways to get the DivX Codec to the HDD. If you do not have live, or are banned, then you need do get someone who has live. This is the EASIEST method:
1. Remove your Hard Disk.
2. Place it on a NON BANNED console, on XB360 that has internet.
3. Sign in to live with a silver account.
4. Attempt to play a DivX/XviD file.
5. Download the Codec (content).
6. Place the HDD back on to your console.
7. You are done!

I (The Ori) have tested this method TODAY, and it works. This does not effect either console in any negative way.

You can also do it this way:
1. You need Xata/Xport or other method to connect the HDD to a PC and explore it
2. Place DONOR drive on PC, with Codec content already downloaded.
3. You need Partition 3:”/Content/0000000000000000/FFFE07DF/00000002″
file “69BCCCF6D6297BFB2AEE9EF626B46C8E22A4B672FF” - This editor did not allow me to use the BACK-SLASH, so I had to use forward slash.
4. Save the file to your PC.
5. Place your HDD on the PC.
6. Create the same path in partition 3: “content”, and put file
“69BCCCF6D6297BFB2AEE9EF626B46C8E22A4B672FF” into the correct folder.
7. You’re done, play DivX/XviD files!

“$SystemUpdate” with USB device:
Unzip the files to a USB memory device. Place the usb in the front of the xbox 360 and turn the power on . The XB360 will come on and then ask for a update; update, then do the DivX Codec thing.

There is no way to get the CODEC without using one of those two methods.

I already posted the link above, where it says “Click here to begin downloading…” That is a link to the LATEST version, from the Xbox web site, explaining the FALL update. IF they have not updated the file, then that’s on their end.

The last methode was the one i needed to use, because i cant use live. But this method doens’t work for me. Maybe because i have an european console?

You need the fall $systemupdate in order to be able to play DivX/XviD, even with the patch file taken from someone else’s console. This is because the new update recognizes the Codec, and if there plays, if not says to download it.

Yes but i have updated my system and I have put the 69BCCCF6D6297BFB2AEE9EF626B46C8E22A4B672FF file in the right place, but still he says i have to download the codec. The codec file and download is from a newsgroup and i think from a American user. So i think maybe thats the issue.

Then put your HDD on another console, sign in with your profile and update for DivX that way. Then you won’t be in any danger of banning.

This does NOT work. The link is for the May 2007 update, not the December 2007 update. Also, following the instructions on the DIvx codec by copying the file onto th HDD still asks for and online update.

That only means that MICROSOFT HAS NOT updated their files. That is THEIR official link for the SystemUpdate. There is a HUGE ARTICLE on Xbox.com, they explain the new fall update, and provide that link. It is NOT MY FAULT that Microsoft is not supplying the correct file.

Oh, I managed to get the update elsewhere. It does pick up divx files now on my PC, but wont play because I still need to download the codec. I have tried the copy and past technique. I have file 69BCCCF6D6297BFB2AEE9EF626B46C8E22A4B672FF but it is not working.

TOKI420. I got the update through newsgroups. The official xbox site does not list it.

I’ve Tried both options live and manual and it seems as if the codec is either console specific. will attempt to check for differences in the two codec downloads (mine from live and te d/led one but neither of these methods work.)

i think reverse engineering the system update would be the way to go for custom firmware or homebrew. has anyone attempted this?

I’ve not managed to get the method of dling the codec on an unbanned console then using it on a banned one to work. It seems that the 360 needs to actively sign into Live in order to update the codec - even if it’s already been dled to the hd. Luckily my console’s not been banned but my friend is pretty annoyed as he wants to play divx movies on his 360.

Can anyone vouch that the second method of getting the codec (connecting the hd to a pc) actually works? I’m reluctant to take the hds to pieces until I’m sure.

Thanks Spartacus. I guess my friend will have to wait until someone figures out how to sort this out.

Once you get the 12/07 update there somehow, taking your HDD to someone else’s Xbox, and downloading the codec works. I have two XBOX360s. Both got the update, but I only downloaded the DivX codec to one of them. I then removed the HDD from the other one, placed it on the one I just downloaded the CODEC to, and it did it again. I put the HDDs back on their respective consoles, and DivX worked on BOTH. SO, the problem is the 12/07 main update. I have not checked the file names for it on both HDDs, maybe I should… PAL and NTSC regions would be different.

I just tried to do the update for divx support with my hdd on a unbanned console and it worked put it back in mine and no dice.I think it is console specific or not the right update or something have not tried to manually install on hdd though.

like I said, I have two XB360s in the house. I updated mine, then updated for DivX. I updated the other one first, took the HDD off and put it on mine, then updated for DivX, worked on both consoles. My HDD also ran DivX on the other console, so I know it works.

It May be that if your console is BANNED it is specified NOT to work? Since you are banned, then you should not have the DivX update, it’s just another way of them saying screw you for violating out EULA.

The PS3 codec is “DivX Certified” and plays all DivX files and most XviD.

systemblade/memory/hdd/systemitems

there is a license file that downloads to the hdd the first time you get the media update.I did some tests and without it all profiles have to be logged into live to enable the 360 to play .avi’s.

2008-01-21 18:04:14

if someone was to locate that license file on the 360 hdd maybe it would be possible to hexedit it to work on any console.

Also once its deleted from the 360 hdd you cannot re-download it again with the media pack .

This license file is the reason that all the people whom have tried to copy the media update to that location on the hdd it hasnt worked for.

They probably did that to keep banned consoles from enjoying the non-banned life… Maybe a little too much, but, an agreement is an agreement…

So in the end, after reading all these comments, it looks like it is *not* possible to unban the unbanned xboxes using this method, correct? Sounded promising (due to the title of the article) but looks like it isn’t possible. :(

There is no easy way to unban any console. There are only three ways:

1. Buy a new one.
2. Send it back to M$
3. Change the Keyvault, and then that means the DVD drive key must change to.

Changing the Keybault is not for novice or even intermediate users. Plus, you need a VALID key, which means you would be stealing it from someone, or somewhere.

only the first download of the media pack is capable of running avi’s while offline too…if you delete the upgrade then redownload it,it will not play avi’s unless connected to live.
