April 12, 2007Get the HD-DVD Volume ID without AACS Authentication
Posted by Alias420
The boys over at Doom9 have done some great work. This time subverting the AACS security on HD-DVD attachments for the Xbox 360.
“This time the target was the Xbox 360 HD DVD add on. Geremia on Doom9 forums has started a thread on how he has obtained the Volume ID without AACS authentication. With the aid of others like Arnezami they have managed to patch the Xbox 360 HD DVD add on… It appears that XT5 has released [an] application that allows the Volume ID to be read without the need to rewrite the firmware. This would mean that anyone could simply plug in the HD DVD drive and obtain the Volume ID from any HD DVD without the hassle of flashing it.”
Hopefully this breakthrough will help lead to many more hacks to come.
Besides the obvious advantage of not needing a Host Private Key anymore there is something else that is good about this. This hack/technique enables us to figure out how the Volume ID is stored on the disc (this is officially “confidential”
). Its very possible we would figure out (or at least get an idea) of how the KCD is stored on the disc. Knowing that and being able to teach a PC drive how to read a KCD will open the door for what I called 3rd generation decryption.
