April 23, 2007Hddhacker v0.90 Released
Posted by greg
the Specialist has released a new version of Hddhacker; v0.90 now allows a non-certified (by Microsoft) 120GB Western Digital Scorpio BEVS series hard disk to be used with the Xbox 360. There are many steps & precautions you need to know — the readme details all that for you. I strongly advise you read it.
It works with the new 120 gb signature. However, this current version can not dump the hddss.bin file automatically from that drive, you’ll have to manually dump sectors 16-22 with a tool like winhex and save them as ‘hddss.bin’. After that, continue as normal with the hddhackr and everything will be fine.
Also, I’d like to stress that there are 2 versions of the WD BEVS drive out there: the ‘RST’ and the ‘LAT’ version. This tool currently ONLY supports the ‘LAT’ version ! You can find on the sticker of the HDD which version it is. I’ll hope to be able to support the RST version of the drive in a future version of this tool.
Use at your own risk!

troy2000 has an interesting progress thread in our forums with respect to running Windows XP on the Xbox 360. Using Ubuntu Linux and Qemu with a couple of optimization strategies, troy2000 was successful in his Microsoft mission. Still ongoing is further optimizations to boot and use Windows in a faster, more suitable manner. It’s most appealing for those running exploitable kernels; 4532 or 4548.
Quite fascinating indeed.

Leif Erikson delivering the hat trick, now releasing a third Mac OS X Dashboard Widget… Of course this one is specific to Xbox360-Hacks. It functions identically to the rest — view & search the latest news using our RSS feed via the OS X Dashboard.

Mac users may also find interest in the other 2 available widgets; PSP-Hacks and PS3-Hacks.

Posted by Alias420
The boys over at Doom9 have done some great work. This time subverting the AACS security on HD-DVD attachments for the Xbox 360.
“This time the target was the Xbox 360 HD DVD add on. Geremia on Doom9 forums has started a thread on how he has obtained the Volume ID without AACS authentication. With the aid of others like Arnezami they have managed to patch the Xbox 360 HD DVD add on… It appears that XT5 has released [an] application that allows the Volume ID to be read without the need to rewrite the firmware. This would mean that anyone could simply plug in the HD DVD drive and obtain the Volume ID from any HD DVD without the hassle of flashing it.”
Hopefully this breakthrough will help lead to many more hacks to come.
Comments (6)Besides the obvious advantage of not needing a Host Private Key anymore there is something else that is good about this. This hack/technique enables us to figure out how the Volume ID is stored on the disc (this is officially “confidential”
). Its very possible we would figure out (or at least get an idea) of how the KCD is stored on the disc. Knowing that and being able to teach a PC drive how to read a KCD will open the door for what I called 3rd generation decryption.
