Xbox360 to get a CPU Upgrade

Posted by greg

Well this doesn’t come as a surprise to me:

In a joint announcement, Microsoft and the manufacturer of the Xbox 360’s CPU, Chartered Semiconductor, have announced that the console’s processor will receive an upgrade in 2007. The upgrade will move the chip’s design to a 65nm manufacturing process (the existing CPU is based on 90nm technology) which will provide lower power consumption and a smaller heat output. It’s expected that the upgrade will not alter the processor’s performance as this could cause compatibility issues with games already released or currently under development for the Xbox 360.

This is fucking bullshit. They should have done this the first time around, now us early adopters are just fucked with our over heating machines

OH come of it dont stuff your console or power pack in a small enclosed space then it wont overheat this wont mess with early adopters that just means they are making it better they do it with every console.

This is some serious spin MS is putting out. Going to a smaller manufacturing process reduces die size which makes cost go down. However, it lowers speed due to increased capacitance in the wires in the chip. To maintain the current speed you must increase the clock rate which will then increase power dissipation (heat). I’m an undergrad in Electrical and Computer Engineering so I know this stuff. The heat issue of the current version is due to the internal power supply. If anything expect the price to be reduced, but since its MS maybe not!

You better go back to school then, everytime they shrink cpus with a pc the voltage goes down so does the heat. speed is not affected. plus when you reduce the size of the chip it shortens the pathways and reduces the the voltage needed to push electrons throught the chip

Now why the FUCK would You have to buy a new one?

It means that the CPU WILL BE SMALLER, AND WILL GENERATE LESS HEAT.

Like a new engine in Your car.
CAN YOU GET A NEW ENGINE, OR GEARBOX, OR ANYTHING IN YOU FUCKING CAR WITH AN ONLINE UPDATE????????
