the Free60 project aims towards porting the open operating systems, such as Linux and Darwin, to the Xbox360. Currently they’ve gathered a lot of useful and detailed information surrounding the inner workings of the Xbox360. For example, apparently the Xbox360 is secured down by the following:
- The flash is encrypted with a per-box key
- The key is stored inside the CPU
- The boot ROM is stored inside the CPU
- Also inside the CPU is a hypervisor that verifies the running state of the kernel, making sure there is no modification (RAM checksums), else the Xbox360 panics and blows up!
- The CPU contains RAM inside of it to store the checksums
- All interrupt/exception handling is done by the hypervisor
- All code runs in kernel mode
- The emulator for first generation games can be updated via an official Microsoft download burned to CD by the user, though the CDs’ content will be encrypted and signed with public key cryptography.The boot ROM is stored inside the CPU

Sounds like linux on this this will be a hell of a lot harder than linux the last xbox.
lol, the last xbox was an accident waiting to happen. Soo many loopholes, it was only a matter of time.
lol yea. The 360 will be way harder, then agian its only a matter of time till the 360 is cracked :P
I’m way more curious about the seemingly standard SATA drive in there… Seagate has a 120 gig model that would fit the bill, I just wonder what kind of protection is in there…
Looks like the simplest way in is to crack that CD download from MSFT. After that, an analysis of the program should reveal how to break the other protection.

don’t get you hopes up… Microsoft stated that the 360 will be crackes eventually, but they packed this box full of protection… This strategy only buys microsoft extra time till it is cracked… If it takes like a year to modify the 360 we are defently srewed. people are now completely used to the modd scene and reaaly can’t go without it…

Me and a group of friends meet every weekend to try and hack the 360.So far no sucess. But we found out a lot of cool shit.Good luck to ANY one who can hack the 360.

Well, the hypervisor is a powerful virtualization environment that provides demonized (daemons) :D processes spying every hacker move. It’s like another machine inside the machine spying what you do…

I seriously think the Microsoft CD thing has gotta hold the key. i downloaded some extra .map files for halo and since then i’ve been trying to get them in there. i’m not sure at all waht to do…
